Patna Eight members of a man's poverty-ridden family were shot and beheaded before their bodies were thrown into a river in Bihar after he secretly married a wealthy girl, police said on Wednesday.

Police in Bihar found the eight bodies floating in a river and have charged 15 people, mostly from the girl's family, with the murders.

The weekend killing took place after 21-year-old Ratan Mandal eloped with 18-year-old Kanchan Kumari and got married secretly, afraid their families would never approve due to an old social rivalry.

"The girl's family invited the boy's family for a meeting on the pretext of settling the dispute, but killed all eight and beheaded them," said Raghunath Prasad Singh, a senior police officer from Bhagalpur, where the incident took place.

Human rights? by ever on 12 Feb 2009

So much for a Model of Democracy and Human Rights````` Wondering why US always bashing China while praising india, as if the right of equality is not of the human rights, as if the freedom of love is not of the presonal freedom.I would rather excange a pretty printed democratical vote to some basical freedom and protections.

Beheadings in Bihar by Steve Quinones on 12 Feb 2009

It is not the imprint of the Taliban, it is not corrupt politicians who don't care and it is not the West who has been blamed lately for India's ills. Simply, it is still a barbaric, tribal society that is fueled by the uneducated, ignorance of most of India, which Indians have vigorously tried to promote as a democratic, civil society. Far from that, the truth being revealed is that India has a socio-economic system dominated by the few ultra rich, while the rest live a sub-poverty level existence. Slumdog Millionaire, the movie is infact a fairly accurate and to the point depiction of Indian society. A society once ruled by ruthless landlords who had enslaved and disenfranchised the masses. Today Bollywood rules, corrupt politicians rule and fearfully a Hindu form of the Al Qaida is creeping into position to establish it's rule! The people that inhabit villages and remote locales still cling to their ancient ways of prejudice, belief system, furthered by the religious intolerance.

Indian Justice system is pathetic. It will take years and years to deliver the justice and punish the culprits.

Pathetic NI States by RItesh on 11 Feb 2009

No wonder all north Indians are fleeing their state to make their lives somewhere else. The north Indian politicians have done nothing to bring in development and civility into their states and society. And these uncivilised people are bringing their manners into other parts of the country. Those north Indians who have made their riches in other states should go back do whatever they can to make their states civilised.

Conflicting cultures and Indian cinema by P Paul on 11 Feb 2009

It is a law and order situation. The accused should be tried in the court of law and punished. But in this case there is yet another accused party that no body is naming. It is the Indian cinema where a girl is first shown in tussle with the hero and later patches up with him in a dance sequence with the boy and his dozen or so friends and admirers. The urban India, usually educated, having been exposed to the vulgarity in cenema for so long that it accepts the recreation as real life experience and has since submitted to its aftereffects, good or bad. In those situations when educated and mature city girl and boy fall in love, it is one less worry for the girl's family. But the Indian cinema which more often than not borders on light pornography and violence runs havoc in the lives of rural people where elders in the family still have say in the marriage of their wards. It is sad so many lives were lost but who knows the accused were the victims too in this madness.

India Burning by Mallikarjun Hadli on 11 Feb 2009

These things are never going to stop at any cost...Even we conduct strikes or agendas or do anything about these, nothing can be done. The people have to understand and change. One thing is sure that our politicians and our police force in some parts don't even bother to take any actions.....Every one is corrupt.....Regards Mallikarjun Hadli

Bihar killings by Ram Nath Babu on 11 Feb 2009

I appeal all the readers of Indian express to file petition to Bihar Government through Indian express and ask Nitish Kumar to try this case in a fast track court, so that justice is done without the usual delay associated with Indian courts. It is imperative that instant justice is done in this case so as to act as a deterrant to others. There is no point in criticising all and saying like 'Mera bharat mahaan'. Let us do our bit by airing our view of giving instant justice to the victim by filing case in a fast track court.Babu

How by Varun on 11 Feb 2009

I think our chest beating about the so called "Indian culture" is the biggest hogwash of the century. The failures of our culture such as the present incident or the Nithari Child Killings far outweigh any achievement our culture has made.

pointless rant by ashokpai on 11 Feb 2009

there are bad apples in every country, civilization, that ever existed. why cant you look at the holistic picture instead of these pointless rant ? i dont agree that nithari kilings or any such incidents will "outweigh any achievement our culture has made" like you say. criminals are found everywhere, throughout ages, even during the best of times in heights of any particular civilization. our judiciary and executive would be tested now - to deliver justice. india right now is not at its peak, far from it.

To a Reactionary by Varun on 11 Feb 2009

Dear Sir,Teh strain of "social rivalry" - the ostensible cause of this crime is not an accidental every-culture-has-it reason. The honour killings, girl child abortion, pub attacks - they all stem from the repressed upbringing of some of our countrymen. An honour killing is never a random crime - its reason is that the "culture" has drilled the message of female subjugation into the very meme of the individuals. These criminals are verily perverted because of their perverted world view - another word for which is culture.

the gulity should be hanged. But knowing Bihar I'm sure the justice will be delivered after the accused have all lived their lives and died of natural causes. Absolutely disgusting.
