New Delhi, March 12 The pressure of studies claimed another young life on Wednesday, this time it is a Class VI student.

Sirel Lawrence (14), a student of Sarvodaya School in Green Park, was reportedly depressed about his final exams result after he failed in three subjects.

According to police officers, Sirel committed suicide by hanging himself from a fan at home using his mother’s sari around 2 pm. His parents were out for work at the time.

The police said that a four-line suicide note was recovered from the spot. “I am sorry for taking this step. Nobody should be blamed for my death,” Sirel wrote in his note.

“When we questioned his parents, they told us he was depressed because he could not concentrate on his studies. His body has been sent for postmortem,” a senior police officer said. Sirel’s father works as a gardener, while his mother is a maidservant at one of the houses. All three lived in the servant quarters in Vasant Vihar.

Elsewhere, in separate incidents, three women allegedly committed suicides in the city on Wednesday.

A 17-year-old girl jumped into the Kondli canal in New Ashok Nagar. Police officers said the body of the deceased, Manju, has yet to be recovered from the canal and rescue operations are on. The police said Manju had a fight with her sister, Seema, after which she stormed out of the house. “She went towards the canal with her mother following. But before she could be stopped, Manju jumped into the canal,” a police officer said. Her father is a small cloth merchant and the family lives in the Mandir Wali Gali.

In the second incident, a 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the fan at her home in Farsh Bazaar. The police said that the deceased, Pooja, was depressed because of dowry harassment. She and Rajiv Kumar had married three years ago and after her suicide, an SDM enquiry found her in-laws guilty of dowry harassment and a case has been registered against them.

A 32-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Krishna Nagar.

The police said the deceased, Pratima, committed suicide when her husband and three children were sleeping. The reasons behind the step were not immediately known, as no suicide note was recovered, the police said.
