Panchkula, March 8 Ward number 20 (Area) — Sector 14

Category- General

Overall rating - 4/10

With the increasing number of illegal houses and slums in this ward, the residents of Sector 14 believe that the increasing crime rate and sanitation problem in the area are the two major causes of concern for them.

They believe that developmental works done in the sector in last few years have been satisfactory.

When contacted, Councillor Randhir Singh Badhran said the UT Administration should provide adequate housing facility for economically weaker sections of the society in order to check the growth of slums and encroachments in the sector.

He further added that he has decided not to contest the Municipal Council elections this year.

Complaints and expectations of the residents

Roshan Singh, a resident of the ward said, “Labourers and slum dwellers have illegally occupied the vacant HUDA booths in the internal market of Sector 14. This is one of the major reasons that Sector 14 has no internal market.”

He further added that a few people had opened shops in the sector but closed them soon after considering the poverty and slums around.

According to Mohan Verma, “The only meat shop of this sector has been a source of nuisance for the residents. People come to this shop to eat and there is always loud music being played around the shop that has occupied the entire area. We cannot sit with our families here due to this nuisance,” said Verma.

Another resident Rakesh Madra said that stray animals are cause of concern for the residents as they have caused many serious accidents in the past and authorities are silent on issue.

Madra said, “Besides stray animals, water supply has also been frustrating the residents. Most of the houses here have three floors and water does not reach even the first floor houses.”

He said the water supply has improved in the last few months, but it was bad till the last year.

Talking to Newsline, Councillor Randhir Singh Badhran said, “The problem of slums is common throughout the city and the government should do some thing about it. I personally believe that the government should have a labour colony where poor people could be housed. Besides, I am satisfied with the overall work carried out in the ward during my tenure. The development works included re-carpeting of roads, construction of a tube-well and maintenance of parks.”
