School Children

New Delhi, November 18: When it comes to watching porn or experimenting with drugs and alcohol, school-going children in Delhi, be it boys or girls, are far from being shy, claims a latest survey.

"26 per cent of the boys surveyed fell in the moderate category and 21 per cent fell in the high category when it came to talks about visiting porn sites, being a common conversation in schools. Among girls, 24 per cent fell in moderate category and five per cent in high category," Chief Psychiatrist, Max Healthcare Dr Samir Parikh, who conducted the survey, said.

The survey conducted among 1000 children (541 boys and 459 girls) from the top public schools in the national capital stated, high population of boys and girls know or visit sites that are not for their age groups.

It also revealed that experimenting with drugs once in a while is common in all schools especially at parties.

While 23 per cent boys agreed that experimenting with drugs was common in parties, 13 per cent of the girls did the same, taking the total to 36 per cent.

"These results seem to indicate that a lot of risky indulgences take place in parties," said Dr Parikh.

Its not just drugs and sleaze that seem to be a favourite among school children but also alcohol.

While 22 per cent of the boys in the moderate category thought having one drink of alcohol at parties is something that everyone does, 16 per cent fell in high category.

"This seems to indicate that a large population, which is more than 60 per cent of students of the total surveyed, consume alcohol," Dr Parikh pointed out.

Smoking within school premises is also frequently done by the children surveyed who belong to the age group of 13-17 years.

"The entire survey was done to understand the though process of the youngsters. It shows that the children are prone to risky behaviour," the doctor added.

Degradation of Youth by R. S. Sekhon on 19 Nov 2008

Ape the Yankee if you want to be part of the hep crowd, seems to be the motto of the Indian youth! It’s another matter, though, the West has experimented with drugs, hippie culture, violence and "it's my life” theme and are now realising it that unbridled freedom has had catastrophic effects on the well-being of the western society at large. But, our youth seem to be besotted with all that is foreign to our culture and as such are easily falling prey to all that plagues the western world.

Education without moral values by Bilal Abdu on 19 Nov 2008

Yet another proof that modern education has failed to bring up morality in students. First we need to inculcate Morality, english education should only secondary. Its seems after repeated reports we have opened our eyes and ears.

Refresher course for parents by Raj Kumar Kamal on 19 Nov 2008

We must tackle the growing tendency of kids going astray by attacking the root of the malady. The virus spreads from parents who themselves lead an indisciplined life and become role models for the wayward off-springs.

children by Ramu on 19 Nov 2008

It is high expectation of parents on poorest convent values and also disappearing of joint family system caused the above hevoc among the children. It is more surprising to see the Maths teachers fault finding in news item than actually realising themselves and what they have contributed to contain such habits from children. It is unfortunate for the parents to have faith in teaching folk that they will inculcate good habits to their children. It is the fundamental duty of every parent to look into the minds of their children and see that they should not imitate western films and their culture.

Porn, drugs, alcohol in Delhi school by Saratchandran on 19 Nov 2008

That is how the aspiring Indian kids become civilized like their American role models! They really need this cultural uplifting like a 'hole in the head'! What a shame!

Wrong Maths by Sumit Mehra on 19 Nov 2008

Skewed maths.....how can 23% boys and 13% girls will take the total to 36%??? This is what happens when news are printed with no accountability of posting incorrect data. If will not need to, but mail me, if you need to learn basic maths.

Poor Calculation by Karan on 19 Nov 2008

Agreed that it is disturbing that kids are experimenting with drugs alcohol and porn. Equally disturbing is that the journalist and the editors all got their maths wrong! :)

Re: Wrong Maths by abc on 19 Nov 2008

So funny..so there are 77% boys and 87% girls are in "good" path; so there is nothing to worry about as 164% students are good

Better to think over facts than maths by Archer on 19 Nov 2008

I'd like to suggest that it would be better if concentrate on servey rather than Wrong Math. Its high time n our kids need very good parental guidence as well as attention..!!

Brush up your fractions by Mr. Math on 19 Nov 2008

It is common sense that among school going kids, girls are fewer that boys. How did the journalist assume they are in equal numbers to add up 23%

Where are those politicians? by Mohan on 18 Nov 2008

Did any politician have time to notice these changes in young school kids in Delhi? Or those politicians who is fighting for supporting the terrorist had time to look in to this matter?

convent education not always the best by ashok pai on 18 Nov 2008

you can see most of these behaviour in convent more than in normal schools. convents do give the best education in terms of english language. everywhere else - other schools can stack up. i dont want to generalize, but loking at my peers, and when i studied in school - it certainly was the case. i dint see any other perceptible difference.

I agree with everyone's thoughts below. Please save our kids from getting spoiled. please spend time with them

writer also seems to be school kid by Maheep Madan on 18 Nov 2008

Writer also seems to be school kid.It was amazing to read "While 23 per cent boys agreed that experimenting with drugs was common in parties, 13 per cent of the girls did the same, taking the total to 36 per cent. "The writer doesnt seems to have basic knowledge of maths. You just cant add the percentagesLets take one simple example. Suppose there are 100 boys and 100 girls.AS per above statement 23 boys agreed that experimenting with drugs was common and 13 girls agreed. so total students agreed=23 13=36. Total students=100 100=200percentage of total students agreed=36/200*100=18% (not 36%)

Time to wake up by My India on 18 Nov 2008

I live in UK and society here is near collapse due to similar degradtion of values in younger generation. In UK and west, they dont have anything to fall back on, dont have anything to remind children about. In India, we have our Hindu religion and its wonderful values which allow freedom as well as restrain. Hindu values are unique, universal and pragmatic. Unless India revives its education system with Hindu values, a downfall like west is around the corner.

They have government by Arun on 18 Nov 2008

Who told they dont have anything to fall back - They have government which takecare of everything..free housing, allowance, etc. So why worry.

Secularism hurts India's children by Bharat on 18 Nov 2008

Secularism as practiced by UPA government of India means "no values" other than corruption, power politics, nepotism, keeping people poor. Create a Hindu value based society in India if you want to save your children and your future.

porn,drugs,etc... by Old indian student on 18 Nov 2008

This is very jeopady to the nations future and the only reason is bloody politics between parents and civilizaiton. Government should stop such public activities than only we can save our children from unpure environment. Hope they will listen or else put them into as they being.

Why culture required? by Rags on 18 Nov 2008

Why culture required? To remain as good human beings. To enjoy the life as per the stages that has in it. If there is no value for culture, there would only be value for porn, alcohol, drugs.

Culture protects society by Bharat on 18 Nov 2008

It is secular education of India that is destroying India from within. The education must be based on Hindu civilization, culture and ethos to protect the future of our children.

culture and protections by varun bharat on 18 Nov 2008

It is absurd and nonsense to say that secular education is destroying india from within.Kamsutra,Ajanta and alora are not product of any secular education.

How to educate the uneducated? by Bharat on 19 Nov 2008

Use the energy where it needs most by vicky on 18 Nov 2008

I think khaali dimag shaitaan ka ghar. I was also captured with this basic insticnt when i was a school kid. an from mine experience i can say when a kid or any person is free he used to do this kinda work , as there is enormour energy within. The only way to stop this an take the children back on tracks is to motivate them to immense games, like soccer, rugby, swimming which will not only consume there energy but also will consume there excess time leaving with them only usefull time to use it where is should be used

Porn, drugs, alcohol among school children by Syamasundara prasad Turaga on 18 Nov 2008

Yedjet aachariti sestraha ... tattat devocharaha .. a saying tells the commons behave like the leaders. Hence, the parents should cultivate good moral character and preach their children. Otherwise the families get ruined soon. Our culture and renisence will be forced to touch ground. This is not an ordinary situation. Wide publicity should be taken up by authorities to educate the ill affects of the free society system.

Awareness important by Manu on 18 Nov 2008

There should be a adhoc committe in every school and case by case awareness when it comes to alcohol and drugs. Thre should be a session in each class every day to educate children about the side effects of this. As my fellow readers commented parents should give time to check their kids. Noamaly the thing is husband and wife are working and often kids are left with mades at home. Mostly they never get time to share with kids. Many aspects come together in this issue. The only thing we can do is to educate children about the bad effects of these bad habbits. Even kids are involved in sexual activities inside schoosl. many MMS scandals are example for this. This starts from metro and will reach to even village schools. Mobile phones should be baned. Parents and teachers should have understandings. Parents should understand kids and their behaviour. Media and technologies are spoiling kids with their easy access!!

School children in Delhi by A on 18 Nov 2008

Wow, some achievement in the 60 years of independence!! Hail TV, hail westernisation!!

Parents should take care of their children by Johney on 18 Nov 2008

It is the duty of parents to keep an eye on their childrens behaviour and also in what company they are. If parents bring up their children properly, there will be youth who will enjoy but not destroy their life. If parents are too busy with the party and their duty, then children will fall into bad company and thus bad behaviour. We may have more terrorists too if parents do not watch what their children are doing.

save children by Sindhoo on 18 Nov 2008

This is really a shocking situation. I think this not only stops with Delhi , but it spreads all over India, in my view this is caused due to the behaviour of the elders towards children, for example if a father smokes infront of a child, definitely the child gets interested in smoking, Media also plays an important role in this , becoz as the heros were picturised like this children think that smoking, drinking and drug addiction are heroic deeds. in order to reduce this the children should be made aware of the disasters that happen due to smoking, drinking and drug addicition, and parents also should keep an eye on their children and their surroundings.
