New Delhi Wearing jackets that announced they were from Delhi Police, five men tricked guards to gain entry into the upscale Heritage City on MG Road on Wednesday night and entered an apartment with the intention to loot. But the woman in the apartment, who had been locked in a room, made it to a balcony and alerted guards who nabbed two of the five intruders.

Police identified the two men arrested as Sachin, resident of Shahpur in UP, and Lokendra who lives in Bawana, Delhi. The three who fled have been identified by police as Farooq, Mahendra and Jugnu.

DLF Phase II police station SHO Kailash Chand said Jugnu, who worked as a carpenter and knew the layout of the apartment complex and its residents, was the gang informer. He had once worked in the Block 18 apartment that was targeted, Chand said.

The men gained entry into the premises after telling guards at the gate that they were from the Delhi Vigilance Bureau. They even wore jackets with Delhi Police painted on the back.

“The incident took place around 10 pm on Wednesday. Police reached the spot immediately after they were informed. We picked up the duo and arrested them after an inquiry. Investigations are on,” DCP (East) Maheshwar Dayal said.

Police recovered a Santro car, a countrymade revolver, a pistol, live cartridges, a chain and Rs 1,600. They also seized masks, ropes and red chilli powder.

“Cases have been lodged against them. We are investigating if this gang was involved in other incidents of robbery,” SHO Chand said.

Atul Batra of the Heritage City RWA said that the guards posted inside the complex were the ones who caught the two intruders after the alarm was raised. “The guards were posted just for this. They did a fantastic job. The two men were later handed over to police. Of the five, one remained outside while the others went in,” Batra said.
