In a travel alert issued to its citizens travelling to India, the US State Department yesterday advised its nationals to be cautious and maintain a low profile during their visit to the country in this period.
"The Department of State reminds US citizens of the continued possibility of terrorist attacks throughout India during the current Indian holiday season, which includes Hindu, Islamic and secular holidays as well as the period surrounding the commemoration of the September 11 terror attacks," it said.
Referring to the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, in which few US nationals were also killed, the statement said it provided a vivid reminder that hotels and other public places are especially attractive targets for terrorist groups.
"US citizens are urged always to practice good security, maintain a heightened situational awareness and a low profile," it added.
"Americans are advised to monitor local news reports and consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues," the State Department said.
The travel alert expires on October 30.

No discussion on terrorist threats to India considers the adequacy or efficiency of our security set-up to prevent or effectively respond to terrorist attacks.Besides Pakistan's role in training and equiping terrorists,the only other matter touched upon in such discussions is the presumed inadequacy of our laws and deficiencies of our judicial systems for punishing the terrorists who are caught. The seaborne attack on Mumbai laid bare the utter failure of our security agencies in preventing the attack and in efficiently and quickly getting the better of the attackers. Yet the media and even the opposition parties did not take the government to task on this. By constantly attacking Pakistan, they virtually saved the government from having to take any blame. Threats to India's security is real. But, who cares?
What is new. India had been and will be a soft target as soon as no on takes any action aginst such terrorist attack. did we learn anything from Mumbai. Are we sure no one can just enter from Gate of India as before.Imagione we have Commandos but they have no transportation of their own or have authority to take hold of passenger planes to fly. Actor Charlie Sheen, the most celebrated actor has issued a video message urging President Barack Obama to reopen investigation into the 9/11 attacks in a viedo address. Sheen had earlier written an open letter to the President in which he claimed that there was cover-up by the Bush administration over the 2001 attacks that claimed the lives of several thousand people. We have a Home Minister who will take the dossier containing IB reports(which he says is not proof enough to take any action) of Pakistani involvement as "proof" to the big brother,USA, and beg them to pressurize Pakistan government to act upon the proof which actually is not a proof.

These vague warnings of attacks have no meaning because no specific action can be taken. In the past, there have been attacks inspite of warnings.

Terrorists don't need an elaborate plan to enter India. All they have to do is reach a border village in Bangladesh, which is contiguous with a village in India and then simply walk across.There was a time when only illegal migrants used to sneak into India by taking advantage of the porous border, which posed a threat to the identity of the indigenous people. But in recent years, the porous border has become a serious security threat to the nation as anti-India forces including jehadi groups have established their strong bases in the neighbouring country, while, several militant groups of the North East region including the ULFA are also maintaining bases in Bangladesh. The porous and soft Indo-Bangladesh border is becoming a hub for terrorist infiltration.Rampant smuggling of goods has shown how completely ineffective the border fencing has been at places, and how this route has been used and utilised by infiltrators.With groups inimical to India establishing bases in Bangladesh posing a serious security threat to India, sealing of the Indo-Bangla border has become the need of the hour and the strength of the Border Security Force (BSF) should be augmented immediately to improve border management.The Government of India must try to secure its own borders. In addition to increasing the strength of the BSF, steps should also be taken to expedite the process of constructing border roads and fencing along the international border, which will help the border guarding force considerably in improving vigil.
