Postal Department releases stamps on butterflies and a scientist

Ludhiana, February 19 The Department of Posts has released stamps on butterflies of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The butterflies of these islands are unique. According to the Postal Department, “These butterflies are specific to their food plants. They have been provided protection by the Central government under the Wildlife (Protection) Act. A few butterflies of Andman and Nicobar islands have also been listed in the Red Data book of International Union for Conservation.”

According to officials of the department, there is urgent need to draw national attention towards the conservation and protection of the endemic butterflies of these islands. The department released stamps on four butterflies.

All these stamps are of the denomination of Rs 5 each. Another stamp relased by the Postal Department is of Dr B P Pal, an agricultural scientist who retired as Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. After retirement from ICAR, he served the nation in different capacities including chairman of the National Committee of Environmental Planning and Coordination.
