DR ANDREAS MERZ

43, COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER

A secret you discovered about Mumbai?

I love dancing (especially salsa) and I was delighted when I came to know that salsa parties are a regular feature in the city, although only on Sundays.

An Indian product or service you can’t do without

I quite enjoy masala chai and authentic vegetarian food. It is simply awesome. Just one cup of chai and your throat is taken care of.

Any fashion tips

Fashion is not only a question of clothing. All the women wearing those beautiful saris really add colour to life.

Dared to try street food?

Yes, I’ve tried coconut and sugarcane juice and spicy Indian food in the suburbs.

A phrase you’re bound to hear?

If spoken to in the local language, I don’t often understand it. But I do hear a namaste often.

Your road experiences?

Driving a car on the roads of Mumbai is actually very simple. You just have to be alert, concentrate, observe the traffic around you, depress the accelerator and fill the gaps on the road. I usually observed this here but rarely in Germany.

What is sexy about Mumbai?

For sure, the pretty girls.

Have you been conned yet?

Not after I learned my lesson with a taxi driver in Mumbai.

I also feel that it is also a question of mindset. I am never afraid of being swindled.

What are the similarities or differences between Mumbai and your hometown?

Nuremburg and Mumbai are as different as two cities could be. I really wish that sleepy car drivers in Germany adapt the driving style of Indians. That would really take care of traffic jams in Germany.

Mumbai, the cultural capital?

It would be, if there were more salsa and tango dancing locations. No, seriously, I am convinced that Mumbai, through its film industry, has the power to lead culture in a major way and to launch new trends. The potential to be a “cultural capital” is high.
