Lucknow Reprimanding the police for the arrest and detention of four school students for allegedly discolouring her posters during Holi, UP Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday directed their ‘immediate’ release.

The four students of UP Sainik School here, who are appearing for their XII board exams, were arrested on Holi night on charges of damaging public property and a case had been lodged against them under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. They were later sent to a reformatory home for juveniles, according to official sources.

Taking serious exception to action taken against the students for their ‘petty mistake’, Mayawati said she talked to the Lucknow DIG and asked him why they had been punished so harshly and that too during their exams. "I have asked him to release them immediately," she told a press conference here.

What kind of government is this ? by rajkumar on 10 Mar 2010

This is by itself is shocking. Why should a CM of state become a active participant in a police case. It is for the public prosecutor and courts. If the Police has erred let the courts dismiss the personel and also make the state pay very high compenstations. This should act as a deterent for any administration. Why not the police arrest Mayawati for abuse and failure to protect 60 lives in the ashramam tragedy. Also her insensitive comments hurt millions of people , why not arrest her for hurting the religious feelings? Afterall they have been put to power for 5 years to rules the people honestly and justily by the very same commoner.

Poster Damage by s s iyer on 10 Mar 2010

This sort of acts by police on students remind the rule by medieval rulers in India. UP is a primitive state where this sort of acts by Police is normal.

I Wonder! by SDG on 10 Mar 2010

Wonder when Mayawati's posters became "public property"? I always thought politic posters were "public menace" as they are put up in private places and over other people's walls, etc. Is this a politic gimmic by Mayawati Govt. at the expense of 4 poor student to appear as a benevolent leader after the refusal to pay money to stampede victims? I wonder!
