New Delhi, January 26 A poultry trader was arrested today for creating a scare about bird flu in Ghazipur area in east Delhi. Police officers said the trader, Irfan Khan, was arrested after he started burning his dead fowls and screamed ‘bird flu’ in the process.

Animal Husbandry minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said he has asked the police to register an FIR against Khan for causing unnecessary panic. Police officers said many of Khan’s fowls were dead and officials from Animal Husbandry ministry had gone to check for bird flu. “Officials asked him to hand over the chickens to them. But he started burning them — numbering 60 — shouting bird flu in the process,” the officer said.

The officer said Khan has been arrested for disrupting peace and spreading rumours. Chauhan dismissed fears about the outbreak of bird flu in Delhi. He said, “A team of doctors conducted tests on the dead chicken and it was found they died due to severe cold.”
