Pune, July 16 It’s been only a day since an hour's load shedding has been declared in Pune and on Wednesday, it was extended to two hours. While the shortfall is unlikely to be bridged as the monsoon season also witnesses an overhauling of the thermal power plants, making the task that much more difficult for some of the 30 companies involved in the generation of power for the city as part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)'s Pune model is the availability of diesel in the city that at best can be termed irregular.

Pramod Chaudhary, Vice Chairman, CII, Maharashtra Council, said they had received complaints from a few companies about the shortage of diesel. The Pune model had come into force two years ago where 30 industries had used their captive power plants (CPP) to generate and consume 90 MW power to keep Pune free from load shedding. Puneites were also paying a reliability charge for this convenience.

“We have written to the District Collector about the fuel shortage,'' R B Gautam, Chief Engineer, Pune Division of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said. Gautam also pointed out that some of their generation stations at Chandrapur, Paras, Nashik and Bhusawal had been shut down for maintenance during the monsoon. The problems have been compounded due to poor rain and no decrease in demand for power.

Companies like Venkateshwara Hatcheries, Alfa Laval, Sandvik Asia Ltd and Cummins India Ltd among others had faced the problem of inconsistent diesel supply. According to officials from Alfa Laval some of the oil companies did not supplying diesel some 10 days ago and the situation could get repeated as the rates have also increased.

When contacted, Chintamani Desai, deputy general manager, (maintenance) Sandvik Asia said that its CPP had stopped for four -five days as there was no supply of diesel. However BPCL has resumed the supply and during peak hours, he said. Madhukar Mali, in charge of the CPP at Venkateshwara Hatcheries that needs 330 litres of diesel daily for generating power, said there was a diesel shortage some time back. Though the oil companies have resumed the supply of diesel since then, industries are a worried lot and have written to the MSEDCL about the issue.
