The voluntary powercut for two hours at Raj Bhavan was undertaken to set an example to save electricity, Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi said in a letter to a Bengali magazine, Desh, that was published yesterday.
The magazine had its cover story on the Governor in its issue of May 17.
Following his orders, the Raj Bhavan has been undertaking a daily two-hour powercut since May 7.
The CPM had seen red in the Governor’s decision and had urged him to skip a meal and quit the Raj Bhavan and live in a smaller residence.
“Some people have misunderstood my decision. But they would not have done so, had I explained it in advance,” Gandhi said.
The Raj Bhavan had been implementing various measures to save electricity for quite some time, he added.
“Over the last two years, the Raj Bhavan has been able to reduce its electricity bill by 15.55 per cent. I have been told that the recent powercut has saved enough electricity, which has benefited 500 households. It’s a matter of great joy for me,” the Governor wrote.
Noting the gap between the demand and supply of power, the Governor said that he did not want that the Governor House receive uninterrupted power supply, while the common man continued to suffer from load shedding. “We cannot generate power but we can always reduce its usage,” said Gandhi. He also said,” The decision will be reviewed at the right time.”
