Pranab slams Pak for flip-flop over Kasab's nationality

Chennai India slammed Pakistan for its "flip-flop" over owning citizenship of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving Mumbai attacker on Thursday.

"He (Kasab) has told us quite categorically where he comes from, where he received military and arms training and where his handlers are located. Unfortunately, despite this, we have seen a consistent flip-flop in the reaction of the government in Islamabad," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told a gathering at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Chennai.

"The recent attacks in Mumbai brought about a huge international reaction; both anger at what happened in terms of 'external hand' and at the sorrow at the number of persons who had died," he said and rued that even after a month of the operation, "there continues to be recalcitrance in bringing the perpetrators to justice."

"I believe this to be the singularly unique terrorist strike since 9/11 (attacks on World Trade Centre in the US) and it is important that anti-terrorist wings in all countries take cognizance of this operation and bring the perpetrators to justice. Let us not forget terrorism knows no borders. All of us are vulnerable to terrorist attacks," Mukherjee said. When death is caused by terrorism, it "diminishes" mankind, he said.

Thanking India's "friends and well-wishers," for their sympathy at this hour, Mukherjee said "we expect you to do more.

"As our ambassadors abroad, your words will be heard in multiple corners of the globe. I call upon all of you to join us in playing the important role of taking forward our concerns to the world stage because these are concerns that you also share," he said.

He also asserted that such strikes will not "shake our resolve" of inclusive growth as India can manage multiple challenges at the same point of time.

However, "India can succeed in her journey only if this kind of sponsored terrorism is resoundingly defeated -- financially, monetarily, militarily and politically," he said in an apparent reference to Pakistan.

Pak for flip flop. by anil bharali on 09 Jan 2009

FM Pranab Mukherjee has been tilting more on american pressure than for bilateral negotiation.

Slam or Salaam? by Surekha on 08 Jan 2009

I wish to ask the Editor for this caption, how does Pranab slam Pakistan? Is he a super yogi to transmit fatal blows to the others (I avoid the word 'enemy') by means of some mystic mental super powers? Otherwise, it is very funny, Pranab slamming anybody ! Or you wanted to say salaaming...?

Lets stop arguing by Bob Kaul on 08 Jan 2009

Lets stop arguing as to what Pranab is doing and instead make people around the world aware of Pakistan being the cetre of terrorism. Meet your MPs, petition your Congressmen, Senators, Ministers, and any other people of consequence and make them aware of your concern about Pakistan being the hub of global terrorism. Go for Human Rights meets and voice your concerns. Lets not worry about what other are doing... lets all do our bit...

How will it help? by Kalidas M on 09 Jan 2009

I think we have been doing all these activities all along in the life of our country since independence and can easily qualify to run a SUPER consultancy service agency in that spectacular field for the benefit of any country in the world. How long can you cry out loud, for even when you do so at home, at one stage everyone begins to ignore you looking down up on you as a source of nuisance. Albeit what you say looks appealing to people with a shrade of conscience, if you ask me, it is utterly useless in real life. We must first hit out at our end criminals till they are eradicated fully then we can concentrate on the external threat sources.Pranab, Manmohan, Sonia, Shivraj (

India's weak response against Pakistan by Upendra on 08 Jan 2009

This roar of the tiger is basically a whimper of a person with his hands tied behind his back due to loyalty to the royal family. This kind of sloganeering will just help bolster the terrorists. I would like Pranab Mukherjee and his party to remember that though our mythology and history is full of examples that tell that the only way to fight terror is to take the fight right to the heart of the terror- Lord Kroishna went into Kansa's capital and killed him there, he alo went into the yamuna to subjugate Kaliya,he also went into the capital Pragjyotishpur to defeat Narakasur, Lord Rama went all the way to Lanka to vanquish Ravan and Chandragupta Maurya went all the way into Gandhaar to defeat and control the marauding Greeks. Will this pathetic limp and weak govt ever learn ? and even if they do, will they have the balls to retaliate ? We need a clean up from bottom up.

destroy Pakistan economically. No war. No fighting. Subsidise cotton and price their major export out of the international market !!

Perfect thinking by Shashank Vagal on 08 Jan 2009

Correct. At least time for such actions can never go away. But do our leaders have such a resolve to hurt the enemy? I doubt. May be another 55 crores to the family of the terrorists as a gesture of goodwill, that is more like us. What soft corner these leaders have for the Papis !

destroy Pakistan economically? by Kartar on 08 Jan 2009

How creative you are? THey will start using their cotton to make end-products such as garments, etc. and become more self-sufficient. Let them keep exporting raw cotton at dirt cheap prices as compared to the contton based products.

Pravasi Devas- Shri Pranab Mukharjee slams.... by Ganesh Joshi on 08 Jan 2009

Considering the flipflop of the FBI in earliest prosection of the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks and diabolic gracious remark that considering t the fact that the Indian casulties are more tha the slain six Americans in the terorrist attack, it will be always better, if India chooses its independent option, witout bothering for what the International Community will do.

non-coop part 1 by new follower on 08 Jan 2009

The minister claims to defeat terrorism via the statement 'India can succeed in her journey only if this kind of sponsored terrorism is resoundingly defeated -- financially, monetarily, militarily and politically'This is a good idea - idea only - what is the implementation aspect. Apparently it was shown to us by our Father of the Nation (no it not Ambedkar). What did Gandhi do in his age - that drove the British to its knees (I write from London!). The idea was NON-COOPERATION. The brilliance of the man was in his simple idea of hurting the British economically. It worked - the Dandi march, swadesh movement to eat, wear and live on Indian products. How do we apply this in our Modern age to defeat the terrorists and Pakistan which harbors them. Stop buying Pakistan manufactured products. Do not go to eat in a Pakistani restaurant (out side India). Every Indian should not buy any Pak basmati rice. Kismat radio in London, being owned by Indians, should not play Pak songs; not employ

any Pak employee - however talented or however in-expensive they maybe. Every Indian in the US should not buy clothes in the stores which are made in Pakistan (Old Navy sells a lot of Pak made stuff). Every Indian in NY should not eat from the restaurant in downtown NY (I think 5th street), which offers food at $5 or $6 - as it is owned by a Pakistani. There are so many places in England where the Pakistani shops can be avoided. In this modern age this non-cooperation movement can be spread via email and by publishing notes - stamped and authorized by the Govt of India. After all if the Pakistan does not own up to its citizens and organizations which support terror then every Indian should begin to hurt Pakistan where it matters most. Yes there will be some retaliation but it is manageable. If Pakistan is drained out of its resources and bought to its knees economically - it will automatically fall in line in punishing the terrorists. So I ask every Indian to quit-Pak-products.

Lets start something-Part 2 by Amin M Rashid on 08 Jan 2009

I agree. But you don't need to buy cloths. Just follow Gandhi-ji and have only one langoti. You save money and damage Pak economy for free.

part 2 by vinod on 08 Jan 2009

i agree , all indians should quit all countries and go back to india

Modern Sathyagraha? by Sam on 09 Jan 2009

Firstly, i would like to tell people of India to stop asking Indians abroad to come back to India if your worry is building India as a super power. All policies made in favour of India anywhere in this world have an Indian residing there who I believe is an unsung diplomatic soldier. There may be some private monetary motives. But indians abroad bring honour to this country. People respect Indians not for what they see on TV news...sati, female infanticide, corruption, killing minorities, castism, blind beliefs but for the deeds and intelligence our fellow abroad indians show in their country that they winess with their very eyes. Okay now regarding this topic and why my above mention is important, The idea of crushing the pakis economically is wise by not using any paki stuff. But, please do note that they get billions every year from US for the work they will never do which need to be stopped. This is partially possible by the Indian guys behind the political scene who educate the situation to the US law makers....

Satire or non-intelligence? by new follower on 08 Jan 2009

I am not sure Vinod understands my letter at all - are you trying to be satirical when asking Indians to go back - or is it non-intelligence on your part? Do understand the basic call is for every Indian to quit Pak-made products and to refuse to deal with Pak citizens - a form of non-cooperation. Holding vigils (which though thoughtful) is of no use - one just increases Carbon foot print. Forming human chains just leads to road blocks. If you as an Indian want to act - want to contribute a small tiny winy part to your country - then quit Pak based products. Ask the shopowner politely where does he come from - if he says Pak - then let them know you are following a policy of not supporting trade of Pak or Pak based citizens. It is the subdued form of a trade embargo. Try practicing it - I am. There are millions of Indians outside the country - and every one of us can make a difference. Just barking at Politicians will not help - because a Politician is not elected to help - they get elected to mint money and have Z security. It is now in your hands to save the country and make sure Pak implodes - rather than making it explode by crude weapons of destruction.

Vinod? Show your true colours by Lakhani on 08 Jan 2009

Very droll! Unlike Pakistanis, overseas Indians have a country (not a failed state) to go back to. A lot of them already have business interests there. I had to return towels bought from M

prophecies by s thulasidharan on 08 Jan 2009

Mr. Pranab, the denial mode and defiant attitude of Pakistan has won them the credit of the strength they possess against India in front of the world community. Inturn India has shown to the world its weakness it has got in its defense strength and hollow prophecies it showed the world and its people.

It is a unique attack in India, nowhere else govt was calling SIMI like organisation secular. by U N S Ecular on 08 Jan 2009

Our flip flop Congress led UPA created the unique environment in India for a terrorist attack like Mumbai. So in that way Pranab claiming credit that this attack was unique is quite right, all credit does indeed go to Congress, RJD, SP, DMK, Communists, and the secular criminal mafia cynically and greedily eating up India polity like viruses. Remember our heroes Laloo, Mullayam, Amar Sing, Amitabh, Karat, Arjun, and of course great secular Saint from Vatican Sonia and Priyanka were crying tears of blood for SIMI, Mullas, et al. Remember Amar Sing went around questioning Inspector Sharma's death by Muslim terrorists, and the so called Secular Muslim University Jamia Millia with its gang of criminal Vice Chancellor and faculty was going around shouting slogans for the terrorists killed and captured. Remember Manmoan and Arjun carving out quotas for Muslims, Chistians, etc. Remember evangelists YSR, Sonia etc. going all out like starved vultures preying on the ignorance

Method in the madness by Indian on 08 Jan 2009

Let us not be fooled by our evil neighbour's flip flops over Kasab's nationality. There is a method in the madness, these constant changes of positions cleverly gives an impression that there are many different types of 'actors' in Pakistan and not all of them under control of the sham govt of Gilani in the showcase. They can thus wash off their hands of all incidents of terror which have been planned and executed by the real power behind the scenes,i.e. the ISI and the Pak army. The world should learn how to run a country from the Pak leaders! They are the true successors of the wily Chanakya, not us in foolish India!
