Chandigarh, January 29 A Pregnant woman was shot at by an unidentified man outside her parents’ home in Bapu Dham Colony on Tuesday evening. Though Sunita survived—till last reports came in she was being operated upon in PGI—her unborn child died. Her assailant was nabbed by area residents and beaten up. He was later admitted to General Hospital, Sector 16, in an unconscious state. His identity has not yet been ascertained.sources said the accused had called Sunita on her mobile phone around 6.30 pm on Tuesday, asking her to come out of her house. Sunita was visiting was her parents in Bapu Dham colony. She lives in village Palsora.

Sunita came out of the house and started talking to the accused. Eyewitnesses said Sunita and the man got into a heated argument. The man took out a revolver, which was later discovered to be countrymade .455 bore, and fired at Sunita from point-blank range. He tried to escape but residents nabbed him. He was beaten up before being handed over to police.

Area residents, however, said, two men had come to meet Sunita. “The two were arguing with her. One of them shot at her and we caught him. The other managed to escape,” said Jyoti, a relative of Sunita.

Meanwhile, police said Sunita had several cases under the NDPS Act registered against her at Police Station-39. “She is married to one Manoj, who works in Delhi as a part-time labourer. She has two children and was pregnant with the third. We suspect that Sunita knew the man who shot at her and a relationship between the two could be the reason of his trying to kill her. We will get her crime file tomorrow,” said Inspector Mani Ram, Station House Officer, Police Station-26.
