New Delhi, August 04 A week from its release, Akshay Kumar-starrer Singh is Kinng is courting controversies it could do without. After the apex Sikh committee gave the film a green signal, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has now formed a three-member committee to watch the film and see whether there is any “objectionable” portrayal of Sikhs.

The DSGMC had written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday seeking a ban on the film till its special panel gives a go-ahead since it allegedly ridicules the Sikh community.

The Chief Minister’s Office has not issued any order so far.

The letter, from DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna, says the film’s promos showed a Sikh character (Happy Singh, played by Akshay Kumar) wearing a turban while sporting a French-cut beard.

“We have formed a three-member committee of experts to watch the movie, further action will be taken based on their feedback,” DSGMC vice-president Devinder Singh said. The committee comprises two granthis (priests) Harnam Singh and Surinder Singh, and Harmeet Singh, a History professor in Delhi University’s Khalsa College.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) had on Sunday tried to pacify the agitators, saying the matter should be left for the public to decide. SGPC, the community’s apex religious association, had earlier formed a five-member panel to check whether the film would hurt religious sentiments.

But “the members have left the matter for the public to decide,” SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said. “We don’t want to create any unnecessary controversy. The filmmaker has assured us there will be no negative portrayal of Sikhs in the film.”

Makkar said Singh is Kinng is an “ordinary film”, not based on Sikhs as such, and “so we should not straightaway draw conclusions and create confusion”.

Incidentally, both SGPC and DSGMC had earlier urged all Sikh Members of Parliament to support the nuclear deal in the trust vote called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month.
