Kolkata, May 15 The students of Presidency College, irrespective of their political affiliation, have finally come to the conclusion that admission tests are necessary for selecting students for undergraduate courses.

The opinion of the students will be taken into consideration at the next meeting of the teachers’ council.

On Wednesday, the students of the Independent Consolidation (IC) held an open discussion with a few teachers and head of departments to arrive at a consensus over the issue after the college administration asked the students to come up with their opinion.

The students of the Independent Consolidation feel admission tests are essential for maintaining the academic excellence of the college.

“We could not discuss the issue with the head of Bengali department because he was absent. Since we were not aware of the functioning of the department, we could not express our views on it,” said Soumik Ghosh, Assistant General Secretary, IC.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) also seems to be backing the admission tests. “The administration has already conceded our demand of holding admission tests in Sociology and Statistics department,” said a student from the SFI faction. The SFI, however, also holds the view that equal importance should be given to marks obtained in Higher Secondary examination and the admission test.

“We have decided that admission tests should be taken in Bengali, geology and philosophy to ascertain students’ knowledge in the subjects.

However, on the issue of admissions in mathematics, we have left the decision on the authorities,” said Mayuk Biswas, a supporter of the SFI. The Left-backed union will inform the authorities in writing about its view in a couple of days, he added.
