Kolkata, March 10 The approaching union polls could give CPM-backed Student’s Federation of India a difficult time.

A combine of three student unions is gearing up to take on the SFI in the union polls to be held at Presidency College on March 12 Independent Consolidation (IC), Democratic Students Organisation (DSO) and the students’ wing of SUCI came together on Monday for a pre-election combine for the union polls.

Commenting on the development, IC member and Cultural Secretary Anirban Mondal said, “The college has never seen anything like the “anti-SFI, IC and DSO alliance” combine in the past.”

“We are not yet sure about our seat sharing arrangement, but certainly, IC will back DSO candidates,” said Mondal. “Though we have differences, we had to come together to combat SFI,” said a student.

DSO members also expressed similar views. “We have different political ideologies. But we have to give a tough fight to SFI,” said Prabir Poy, a physiology student and a DSO member.

The election is a prestige issue for the CPM-backed SFI, as the college has largely seen anti-government protests on the issue of land acquisition for industry in the recent past.

SFI has not won the student body elections since 2003.
