New Delhi Jharkhand was placed under President's rule on Monday, ending political uncertainty in the state in the wake of Chief Minister Shibhu Soren losing a byelection which forced him to resign.

An unscheduled meeting of the Union Cabinet decided to recommend to President Pratibha Patil to bring the state under Central rule and keep the 81-member assembly, which has its term till March next year, under suspended animation.

The Cabinet recommendation was sent to the President who approved it and sent it to the Home Ministry, official sources said.

The decision was based on Governor Syed Sibtey Razi's report on the political deadlock in the state after the Chief Minister stepped down on January 12 when he failed to enter the state assembly through a bye-election within six months of taking over the reins of the state.

The state which went to polls in 2005 has seen three Chief Ministers with Soren becoming the Chief Minister on two occasions, BJP's Arjun Munda for 17 months and Madhu Koda, an independent backed by Congress and JMM, occupying the post for almost two years.

The Naxal-hit state has been in existence for the last eight years. The BJP came to power with thumping majority in November 2000 after the state formation. The BJP government was headed by Babulal Marandi was replaced by Arjun Munda by the party in 2003.

Jharakhand assembly by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 19 Jan 2009

Taking into consideration the horse-trading going on in Jhajkjand, the assembly should have been dissolved and fresh elections ordered. Keeping the assembly alive is the game of congress and RjJD for gaining time for bribing some MLAS and coming to power. We have not forgotten the promptness shown by UPA in dismissing Bihar assembly on the gound of alleged horsetrading and the dirty manouvres if Lallu and But singh.

President rule in Jharkand by V.Shanmuganathan on 19 Jan 2009

I think this is the "only" way to save the "democracy" in Jharkhand state. It is a curse to our Nation that we have lots of Shibu soren type politicians. The Shibu "GHRAHAN" it seems will not leave Jharkand state till he and his party completly routed in the up-coming Parliamentary

WELL DONE by dv sharma on 19 Jan 2009

Presidential rule was must to stop the more low level of Politics.

Correction - prez rule aids the low level of politics these days by Gautam on 19 Jan 2009

Well Sharma ji, I would differ from you on this - the Prez office seems to be used by the ruling parties which indulge in low level of politics. Prez office passes ammendments to CrPc without sending back for re consideration to give petty criminals a free run. It imposes Prex rule so that the center which is aided by Soren can rule the state at the behest of the ousted Shibu Soren. In Prez rule no govt action can be questioned so now the govt officers will do as Soren bids. Sad days for our country
