Prices soar, as do BJP spirits

Bangalore, May 11: If the election in Karnataka heralds things to come, then one of the key battlegrounds in the fight to govern India will be the issue that angers Meena Govindaraj, a mango seller.

"All the prices for household goods have shot up," said 36-year Govindaraj by dozens of mangoes piled high in a market of Bangalore. "We can't even buy enough cooking oil.”

Govindaraj is the political nightmare of ruling Congress party --someone who says she will vote for BJP to punish the government over inflation, now at a three-year high of over 7 per cent.

The three-stage Karnataka election that began on Saturday pits Congress against BJP and JD-S.

The winner of the fight between the big two will get a major boost ahead of general elections due by early 2009. And the BJP thinks it has it made.

"Price rises have become an ambush for Congress," said Arun Jaitley, BJP's main election strategist, credited with helping the party win a string of state elections this year.

"I've never seen a government at the Centre with this kind of inflation issue win an election."

The Karnataka election is the first major one since inflation hit headlines this year. The vote is a test to see how rising food prices will hit Congress and if BJP is correct in betting it could bring them back to national power.

But inflation is not the only issue in India, or in Karnataka.

Caste politics and infrastructure problems will play a big role in these state elections, highlighting how politics in a federal India of 1.1 billion people can often be more about complex local conflicts than overarching national issues.

Nevertheless, national issues do matter.

Congress came to power on the promise of ‘inclusive growth’ and now worries it could suffer the same fate as the BJP in 2004, when a backlash from the rural poor helped throw the party out despite a booming economy.

Food prices have been key to political survival in the past. Onion prices helped push out a government in 1980.

The BJP has taken out newspaper advertisements. "Who does Congress blame for rising prices? Except itself everybody. You included," they say.

A CONGRESS VICTORY?

But Congress believes that it can win Karnataka, a former bastion, with promises of political stability after four years of chaotic coalition governments involving the BJP and JD-S.

Congress also has a track record of betting on vote banks of Muslims and lower castes, many of them poor farmers, that it feels will be immune to appeals of a more urban-centred BJP.

"I think price rises are an issue, but not the decisive issue," said S M Krishna, former Karnataka Chief Minister now helping run Congress's election bid.

Some economists say this inflation will just be a blip. A similar jump in prices in 2007 proved temporary.

But rising prices are a global concern, as international commodities prices rise on speculation, surging demand in Asia, bad weather and biofuel. India also suffers from years of poor agricultural performance which have created supply bottlenecks.

In Ramanahalli, an hour's drive from Bangalore, villagers gathered around a temple and complained about prices, among other things such as land seizures by the state government and water shortages. But no one said they would vote for the BJP. Many waited directives from village leaders.

"Kitchen life is becoming very difficult," said Aruna Venkatesh, a 28-year-old villager. "When politicians come they try and give us assurances, but they never do anything."

But the BJP does not seek to win all voters. Just enough to win power, which comes down, it says, to a swing voters.

"We are looking for 4-5 per cent of voters switching preferences because of this issue," said Jaitley.

This is the most iefficient govt. Independent India's history. The 2 economists one a PM and the other FM have no powers. All power is in the hands of the Italian. This Congress is not the congress lead by the Mahatma. It was first lead by a half muslim, then a Hindu converted to Islam, then a Muslim converted to Chritianity and now a full blooded christian born in a foreign land.I appeal to Karnataka people not to vote to this congress party lead by Sonia.

Prices sour, as do BJP spirits...... by A.A.Choudhari on 11 May 2008

It is not understood whether under UPA dispensation we are witnessing any rule that could be descried truly as democratic? In this coalition Communists have brought shame to the whole spectacle that is outwardly called a foreign policy of an independent nation while stalling the Nuclear Deal. Agriculturists are committing suicides due to their wrong policies.Prices are rising high to the distress of the common man. Insecurity has increased to preponderous positions. With howard specialist, running the Government, the picture should have been some what different,if not altogether satisfactory, for some inevitable reasonsIf under such circumstances, not bringing relief anywhere on the horizon, is it blameworthy for the opposition, who have also been elected by the people to seek power to take corrective measures. As heading shows, you appear to be soar more for heightening spirits of the BJP, rather than heightening, prices. Manmohansing should have vacated long before. He wont.

MILITANT RULE WITH A MIX OF RELIGION IN INDIA?OSAMA-BIN-LADEN FAILED AND SO WILL BJP. by "Nautankee" on 11 May 2008

I have been reading many different and anti-Congress comments from this Jogesh Datta.I have reasons to believe that this person hardly knows the a,b or c of democracy, because the different between a democracy or dictatorship is that in democracy everyone has equal rights, but in dictatorship states everyone is kept like a sevant by the militants. The BJP wants to impose a combination of militant rule mixed with religion in India, now this is the rule which was also being imposed by the taliban warlords in Afghanistan.

wat u mean by raj on 11 May 2008

Indian Express has erased my comments. Obviouly I am succeeding in educating people.

You misunderstand BJP by Shanth on 11 May 2008

I think if scrapping arcitle 376, bringing common civil code, scrapping Haj subsidies and opposing minority appeasement is communal and taliban like then I have no qualms supporting BJP. If Congress wants to spend 2/5 of India's foriegn reserve on muslim specific improvements in 11th Five year plan thinking that the majority would think this act as symbol of secularism I am sorry. I as a tax payer cannot afford this sort ridiculous thing happen to my nation. How low can Congress stoop? They wanted Muslim reservation in the Army...

Karnataka by Yogesh Datta on 11 May 2008

Something is very wrong with people of South India. They specialise in cutting their noses to spite their faces. They call it "Dravidian pride". They will suck their caste and won't worry that Manmohan Singh has given Muslims the "first claim on India's resources". Truely speaking I will not be surprised if Congress wins in Karnataka, just look at Tamil Nadu, Hindus voted for a person who insults Hindus and Hinduism and call it "Tamil pride". I think sun has melted their brains.

Pashuram by Da Punjabi on 11 May 2008

As Pashuram Killed Kshatriya clans for their atrocities on Brahmans, as Lord Rama, Aka mrayadda prashotam, killed Asuras for their atrocties on Rishi munis, and Aryan culture, Likewise, there would be another entity which will finish off Dravidian terror, and save the people of Tamil Naidu. Dravidians are colonial Pet dogs and are quiet different from a proud tamil.. I go to Tamil temple in NYC, and it is always fun seeing the devotion among them.. Dravidian is an artificial political entity...

Karnataka by SRaman on 11 May 2008

Ask yourself first why you people are voting for communists who invites overseas investment in WB and oppose to other states. And don't forget about Nandigram. Ofcourse the melted brain is milking money to you and otherpoor guys.
