Kolkata, May 6 A 62-year-old principal and owner of a primary school in Garia committed suicide in the teachers’ common room on Tuesday morning amid rumours that he ended his life to escape the ignominy of being caught molesting a student of Class IV.

On Monday afternoon, the parents of this girl — who studied in the Children’s Academy — lodged a complaint with the police after the mother stumbled into the principal’s room where she allegedly witnessed the act.

She said, “I went to pick up my daughter from school yesterday afternoon. Failing to spot her with her friends, I entered the principal’s office. The door was open but the curtains were drawn. I was disgusting to see Das misbehaving with my daughter. I confronted him but he tried to make light of the incident. Later, we registered a complaint with the Regent Park police station.”

Word spread and locals began to assemble in front of the school on Tuesday morning, which was also Das’ residence. It is learnt Das had managed to sneak out of the school to broker a compromise with the young girl’s family. But his attempts were snubbed. He sneaked back and locked himself up in the common room.

His lifeless body — hanging from the ceiling — was found by the staff at 8 in the morning.

The girl’s father said, “We sent our daughter to school in good faith. We did not foresee such a terrible thing would happen to her. But we are glad our daughter is well and healthy. The school will shut down now. We only hope the paperwork is cleared soon so that we can take our children elsewhere.” Locals said this was not a one-off incident — in fact, there have been talk about Das’ sexual misdemeanours before, but they were hushed up quickly because of his political connections. Another said the girl’s parents did not leave any time for Das to negotiate further. “The crowd outside was also very angry,” he said. Police officers who were taking his body out had a tough time, jostling with the crowd. The police also resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the people. Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar refused to discuss the case, saying it was under investigation.
