Pune, February 9 Amidst tight security arrangements, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday morning paid a brief visit to the office of the Commonwealth Youth Games at International Convention Centre (ICC) on Senapati Bapat Road. During his 15-minute stay, he went around the office before wishing MP Suresh Kalmadi and the CYG team good luck. “You people are doing a good work. All the best,” the Prime Minister told the CYG officials.

Even though the Prime Minister’s visit was not in the official itinerary, it had been finalised at the last minute. The stretch of road from Raj Bhavan up to the building had been completely cordoned off. The convoy reached the ICC complex at 9 am sharp and left after 15 minutes, after which it proceeded to the university helipad and then to a function in Mulshi. At the ICC complex, the Prime Minister also was shown a corporate film on development work ahead of CYG.

MP Suresh Kalmadi welcomed the Prime Minister at the ICC office. Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Congress general secretary Margaret Alva and State Marketing Minister Harshwardhan Patil accompanied Singh.

Later, speaking to media persons, Prime Minister expressed grief at the death of social worker Baba Amte. “With the demise of Baba Amte, an era has come to an end. He was a great son of our country — a devout follower of Gandhian values, who devoted his life for the service of the poor and the downtrodden and for the upliftment of the leprosy patients. His life and work will be an inspiration to the coming generations.”
