London, February 2: Prince William, the second in line of succession to the British throne, is considering a brief career in the fourth estate.

The short spell in journalism is one of a series of 'work experience' placements being discussed by the Clarence House as part of a plan to prepare the Prince for public life and ultimately the throne, The Guardian reported on Saturday.

"I think it would be a good idea for him to find out how the media works. It's something I would like to see him do," a senior official involved in the decision-making process at Clarence House was quoted as saying.

According to him, William is unlikely to join the paparazzi but would prefer the newsroom of a leading national newspaper and his byline, presumably William Wales, may appear on something other than the court circular.

At present, the Prince, who has already served in the Royal Army, is undergoing training with the Royal Air Force in Lincolnshire to become a pilot and later this year will spend time with the Royal Navy.

After that, advisers are keen for him to undertake a range of training in civilian life, to complete his education in how the country he will one day rule operates.

"He's learned about the armed forces. Now, he has to learn about the state," the official was quoted by the British daily as saying.

However, other options being considered for William include spending time at the Foreign Office or in a government department to watch the civil service at work -- though not Downing Street.
