Kolkata, February 3 Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee described private capital as a “necessary evil” which the government could not do without.

“There are problems associated with private capital. But we cannot shut our doors to it,” he said at a DYFI rally held at Shahid Minar today.

Drumming up support for CPM’s industrialisation policy, Bhattacharjee harped on “employment opportunities”. “Industries for jobs” was what dominated the chief minister’s address to the young comrades gathered at the rally. “We need industries for jobs. The Opposition only knows how to say ‘no’. It is for you to make it ‘yes’,” Bhattacharjee said.

He once again justified the need for the Tata small car factory at Singur. “We are not bothered who is making it, what kind of car they are making and who are going to drive the car. All we know is that it will create jobs for 6,000 people,” he said.

The chief minister added, “This is precisely why we need a petro-chemical hub at Nayachar. We could not set it up at Nandigram. We had made a mistake. But we are going to set up one at Nayachar. It will generate 600,000 jobs and we cannot say no.”

He accused the erstwhile Congress government in the state for derailing the industrial advantage that Bengal had attained post-Independence. “It took us long to regain the momentum. Now, we have the US, Germany, Japan and China evincing interest in investing in West Bengal. We cannot just sit back and say that we want only agriculture and no industries,” he added.
