Ludhiana, January 12 While their legitimacy remain suspect, they are going a long way in solving the crisis of parking spaces in the city.

With the government plans on new parking lots and multi-storey parking lots making no headway, private parking lots have emerged as a solution, at least for the time being.

One such private parking lot is at Model Gram behind the new courts complex. It has been set up at a vacant plot owned by an advocate.

Lucky, an attendant at the parking lot, says, “This is a private parking lot and it is mostly lawyers who park their vehicles here.” There is another private parking lot in the same area.

“Private parking lots have solved the crisis of parking space in and around the courts premises to a good extent. More than a thousand lawyers, their support staff and over 10,000 litigants visit the courts every day. A number of police officials, too, visit the courts daily,” said Sandeep Kapoor, a lawyer, who is also the district president of the Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha.

Rajinder, manning the parking lot in front of Flamez Mall on Malhar Road, says, “The plot has been lying vacant and was not being used for any purpose. So, we thought of doing business before the owner, one Harkrishan, builds anything here.

He says it’s only a temporary parking lot and will be brought down when the owner decides to start the construction.

Another private parking lot is on the National Road. One more exists on Mall Road.

Shivali Kapoor, a shopper, who had come to a shopping complex on the Mall Road, says, “We no longer have to waste our time in finding space for parking our cars.”

Interestingly, as compared to the parking lots being managed by the Municipal Corporation or other government agencies, the private parking lots charge less.

Municipal Commissioner Vikas Pratap, when contacted, said he was not aware about the private parking lots and would get it checked whether they had sought permission from the Municipal Corporation.
