Singur, October 4: The overnight blockade of the Durgapur Expressway that runs beside the Tata Motors small car plant and railway lines at the nearby Kamarkundu railway station in Singur, was lifted at noon today, though the dawn to dusk bandh continued.

CPI (M) supporters, who were demanding that the Tata Motors factory reopen after the announcement by Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata last evening that the Nano plant was to be wound up, decided to lift the blockades as it was pay day, Hooghly CPI (M) District Committee member Dibakar Das.

Since many factories in the area were to pay wages and bonus ahead of the Durga Puja festival today, it was decided to lift the Durgapur Expressway and railway blockade, Das said.

"The blockade of the expressway and the Kamarkundu railway station would have prevented workers from collecting their pay and bonus, therefore we decided to lift it," he said.

Meanwhile, a CPI(M) leader, Uma Ghosh, who had gone to visit his relatives at Beraberi was assaulted at the Beraberi Bazar.

Das claimed that Ghosh was beaten up by Trinamool Congress supporters.

A police complaint has been filed, he said. Beraberi is one of the areas from where land was acquired for the Tata Motors project. The bandh since 6:00 am, meanwhile, was continuing.

The blockade was, however, to be lifted at Sanapara, where there was a 2 km line of Kolkata-bound trucks on the Durgapur Expressway. Sanapara is half a kilometre from the main gate of the Tata Motors plant.

mamta madam by Bipin Mishra on 19 Oct 2008

Now Mamta Banerjee should provide jobs to those who are now jobless to prove her point if that cannot be done then she should keep herself out of these issue. forget national welfare she cnaot maintain her state welfare. she should quit instead of causing so much trouble to others just for her publicity

Tata has called Mamta's bluff , It is high time Politician should stop behaving as if they are the only body who can make decision

madame mamata by mathew on 04 Oct 2008

Madame(Madame as in a cheap whore) Mamata who lives in a 3000 sq feet multistoreyed house behind the one room house (which is where all media interviews takes place) is the enemy of the people. She will lose from Calcutta south constituency and if she is emboldened by the recently concluded Panchayat elections and thinks she can dislodge the Left Front government she is living in a fools paradise (and probably enjoying the experience). What is her ideology , what is the program for development for Bengal , what is her alternate vision for the state are not coherent and are unknowns ? Today she has the support of the lumpen elements in West Bengal. As railway minister her only contribution was in painting the colour of all train compartments from red to blue( she was then also seeing red). Anarchy and chaos are her only offerings.

BENGAL'S LOSS IS MAMTA'S GAIN by M.M.NAAZIM on 04 Oct 2008

TATA'S EXIT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN FOR BENGAL" INDUSTRIAL RESURGENCE . NEW INVESTORS WILL TURN AWAY . THANKS TO MAMTA FOR THIS INDUSTRIAL DISASTER WROUGHT ON THE PEOPLE OF BENGAL . THE WHOLE WORLD WAS KEENLY LOOKING FOR THE ROLL OUT NANO -- THE CHEAPEST CAR OF COMMON MAN -- FROM BENGAL . SINGUR WITH NANO COULD HAVE DEVELOPED LIKE GURGAON WITH MARUTI . ONE STUPID EGOISTIC ARROGANT POLITICIAN CAN DAMAGE THE DREAM OF ONE LAKH BENGALIS EMPLOYMENT WHICH NANO COULD HAVE GENERATED .. IT IS MATTER OF SHAME ON THOSE WHO ARE ASSOCIATED WITH MAMTA'S RETROGRADE MINDSET . SHE SHOULD BE SHOWN HER WAY OUT OF BENGAL IF THE PEOPLE OF BENGAL DO REALLY HAVE SOME PROGRESSIVE MIND . BUT THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN

Mistaken cause by naresh on 04 Oct 2008

Ms Mamta Banerjee may not only be working for the farmers but could well be working for some negative elements who are against India producing the wonder car "Nano".

MOVING NANO TO HIMACHAL PRADESH by Rajinder kumar kapoor on 04 Oct 2008

tata should not consider their nano project work to start at singur while they should suppose to talk with himachal pradesh govt. for acquiring land in H.P,As H.P govt already given TATA,s offer to heartiest welcome in Himachal with "NANO PROJECT PLANT" this would be a much better option for "TATA" b,coz many factor either environmental, atomospheric, social, political,

Tata's departure by Tusar Datta on 04 Oct 2008

Tatas are to be blamed for the entire episode. Tata Motors is in trouble for their JLR acquisition. Sale of tata Car has dropped by 9% in September while sale of Hyundai and Maruti has increased. Tata have to repay right now huge external bowwowing. Their right issue was delayed. So Tata had to stop the project but instead of telling the truth they put the blame on mamata. Tata should not be let off so easily. They are playing the same game in Orissa, Bangladesh and now West Bengal. They should be forced to pay compensation for all the damamges they caused. West Bengal govt. is saved beacause they were to pay billion crore subsidy to Tata. Media should publish the true story behind Tata's departure from different projects.

Well done Tata by Pranesh on 04 Oct 2008

This is a shrewd Tata, the business man taking far sighted decisions. He knows for sure that should his business and NANO manufacturing be held up due to the 'red flag' bearing strikes, his losses would be far greater than the current ones (if at all he has incurred any). How can Tata's now 'favourite' WB Governament come to his rescue when the CPM goons go on strike and bring the factory to a halt?? He knows that nither Buddhadebs nor Karats nor aging Basus be able to help him as CPM thinks that 'to strike is their birth right'. Well done Tata !!. I am very happy that my shares with you have become safer !!

End or start of Nano by Suresh Chatterjee-Kolkata on 04 Oct 2008

Nothing unusual.Only history repeating itself albeit in a different way.Since when did Bhadra loks of west bengal began working for development. These fellows destroyed every thing they got ( Calcutta in the form of capital of East India Company) from the Britishers in just a few decades.Congralutions to them all for driving Tata out.

Through out Mamata and Communists by Nilap Mishra on 04 Oct 2008

The people of West Bengal should through out both CPI(M) and Trinamool in the next election if they want to progress. If they continue there will be only bundhs and no industry

Bandh to make capitalist work, Bongali communist is so prorgressib by Joy Bongal on 04 Oct 2008

A bandh against closure, so that a capitalist can exploit peasants and worker. Bongal is progressibing so fast, the world can not keep pace with Bongalis. Joy Bampointh. Only in the land of Mutter Teresa, the wonder woman who cured leprosy by converting dying into Christianity can such miracles happen.

Nano Protest by Nanda on 04 Oct 2008

Let the farmers of Singur throw out Ms Mamta Banerjee from the state then only investors will think of investing in West Bengal

Nano Protest by Hartej on 04 Oct 2008

Everyone seems to be getting very emotional about the Singur situation. Here are some questions they should ask themselves before reacting.1. Could Mamata Banerjee have sustained a protest if she did not have some popular backing.2. What prevented Ratan Tata from speaking to the farmers directly. Other industrialists have dealt with farmers face-to-face successfully.3. Why didn't Ratan Tata accept the modified plan for land use as proposed by Mamata. Why the insistence on using land in a particular way only. Transporting some parts a few hundred metres wouldn't have added to his costsdrastically.4. Why should industrialists expect people to be thrown off their land and give up a way of life by offering mythical promises to state governments. They always want concessions, but are they prepared to share their profits with those whose land they have taken over.5. The Tata's shifting to another state will mean another set of farmers will be displaced. No sensible person is against development, it has to be done equitably. The poor cannot be made poorer, to make an industrialist richer.

Tata Nano plant at singur by shastri on 04 Oct 2008

With a Street fighter Mamta in West Bengal no development can ever take place in West Bengal. The whole Indian community overseas watch India with their heads hung in shame when we have anti social elements like Mamta not allowing any development. Govt.needs to deal with such people more severely. Why can't West Bengal and Kerala take cue from China when it comes to industrialisation. For West Bengalis one bundle of Beedi and an old Lungi is enough for their whole life and want no development at all. A zero watt bulb lit their house is enough all through their life. With this lifestyle when can West Bengal in particular and India in general come to senses.

two sides by M.Lakshmanan on 04 Oct 2008

There are two sides always...

Protest..... by Basant on 04 Oct 2008

They should protest in front of Mamta and Amar Singh house not in Singur. That stupit lady has ruined people life for some votes.

Mamtha by mohan on 04 Oct 2008

I agree. Ms. Mamtha Banerjee has done the people of Singur a disservice of the highest order. The people of Singur will suffer. Politicians will not suffer in any way, their pockets are lined and stomachs full. What do they care for the poor, the hungry and the Country?? Nothing. They will do anything for the sake of votes. History and the people of Singur will judge her harsly, not that she cares.

WE THE PEOPLE ARE PUPPET by Kannan on 04 Oct 2008
