Surat, February 16 An inquiry has been launched against the six officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) who have been accused of cheating the daily wage workers of the corporation's Filaria Department. Surat Municipal Commissioner S Aparna ordered the inquiry after acting on the findings of the vigilance team of the SMC, which had conducted surprise checks in Panas, Althan and Bhatar area in Athwa Zone last week.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner P J Jhala has also been asked to investigate the matter. "I have got the report from the vigilance department and we are investigating the case. We will also try to find out since how long these people are doing such cheating. If the sanitary inspector and his friends are found guilty we will take strict actions against them," Jhala said.

During the surprise checks, the vigilance team found that many daily wage workers were paid half of their salary by the sanitary inspector and assistants.

These workers were also forced to sign on the receipt of full wages. A total of 50 primary health workers were appointed on daily wages in Athwa Zone, last year.

During investigations, the vigilance officials found that a sanitary inspector, four sub-sanitary inspectors, and a primary health worker were involved in the racket.

They used to deduct between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 from the salary of each of the health worker. By doing this, they used to pocket Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 every month.
