Jammu The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday ordered a probe into the cause of fire that broke out on Monday night in historic Mubarak Mandi complex – a heritage complex which was once the seat of power of erstwhile Dogra rulers of the state.

This followed a visit to the complex by the State’s Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora on Tuesday. He instructed the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr Pawan Kowal to conduct an enquiry to ascertain the cause of the fire, an official release in Jammu said, adding that the minister was accompanied by senior civil and police officers.

A fire had broken out late on Monday evening in the old record room of the historic complex, which is currently under renovation. Some timber used for renovation work was burnt in the fire, which was doused after half a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service.

Meanwhile, official sources informed that the fire broke out at around 9 pm and the residents of adjoining localities informed the police regarding the incident, which occurred in the complex of Dogra Rulers.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, Manohar Singh immediately rushed to the spot along with four fire brigade vehicles and the fire was control within two hours.

"The fire broke out at the back side of the complex at the first floor of the old library complex, which is under renovation, these days and not a single person was hurt, as the complex was completely empty," SSP added.

Official sources further said that more than eight vehicles of fire brigade headed by Director, R S Sodhi swung into action and controlled the flames of fire immediately. The action to control the fire continued till mid-night.

It is not the first time when historical and unique complex of Dogra Rulers effected with sudden and mysterious fire, but earlier on December 15, 2006 a mysterious and devastating fire broke out in an important part of Mubarak Mandi complex which houses treasury of Maharaja's period known as "Tosha-Khana". Later the antiques of Maharaja's period were shifted from Mubarak Mandi to the civil secretariat and are still there till the complex will be renovates. Tosha-Khana had valuable articles, gold ornaments and decorative materials, utensils, etc, was, however, saved from any damage.
