Professional Pak orgs helped 26/11: Navy Chief

Sureesh mehta

Mumbai The Mumbai carnage could not have been carried out without indirect support from "professional organisations" in Pakistan, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said in Mumbai on Thursday.

"Of course there is indirect support.....some professional organisations could be involved," he said when asked if the terrorists had received assistance from Pakistani state agencies.

"How do you learn to be doing what you are doing? How do you get the infrastructure you need for this kind of thing?" the admiral asked.

"Those are all issues where some professional organisations could be involved," he said after commissioning the navy's first helicopter base, INS Shikra, in Mumbai. Even if the terrorists who participated in the attacks were non-state actors, as claimed by Pakistan, they were still the responsibility of that state, he said.

"Pakistanis have been saying...that there is no state agency that is involved. These are non-state actors who have got the job done. Whatever that be, the fact of the matter remains that non-state actors emanating from a state become the responsibility of the state," he said.

Mehta also said there had been no additional deployment of forces by the Navy in the western sector following the terror strikes.

"The level of alertness is always high and our forces are always ready," he said, adding there were ships on duty on the western seafront of the country but no orders increasing the state of alert had been given. Following the terror attacks there were multiple organisational issues being discussed in order to improve co-ordination among the country's various security agencies of the nation, Mehta said.

Tell us something new by Kalidas M on 26 Jan 2009

Big deal, what's the news here? Why no one from that quarter talks anything about any retaliatory actions? Vow! My mind has stopped working. What kind of a rigmarole is this?

Shame on us by Khudakabanda on 22 Jan 2009

A dozen people knocked the stuffing out of the powerful United States, a handful of men caused mayhem in the UK but the citizens of these countries never did once doubt the calibre of their armed forces or called any of their agencies names. They stood together and continue to do so knowing fully well that a nation's support is its greatest strength. Terrorism only gains further when nationals denigrade their own strengths. Freedom of expression needs to be tempered with caution. We seem to be a rather ungrateful bunch of citizens who lack pride in ourselves. It seems fashionable these days to mud sling at any one in authroity for the heck of it and without much thought, what a shame. Those who have no faith in their own military or their country are best advised to run elsewhere for their lives and leave it to the rest of us to sort this mess out, which we definitely will.

Shame on us by Barot on 22 Jan 2009

Dont forget that the govts and security agencies in U.S. and U.K. hasn't allowed repeat of terrorist strikes on their nation. On the other hand, we watch helplessly while the terrorists make one audacious strike after another. While I do not doubt the breavery of our armed forces, there is surely a lapse in performing their duties and they have failed miserably to protect the lives of common citizens.

Over-sensitive conscience by romesh.sharma on 22 Jan 2009

Understanding your view and do appericiate your concern I would say that most people like me as well criticize only then when they are touched and feel cheated because of inaction and foolish there-after statements which are aimed only at to save their own faces and positions. They simply try to justify that what was the result of their weakness and carelessness.I like most others commenting under frustrations and disappointment caused by falsified promises and big words. They all (well most of them)heave their chests high with pride patriotism. They expect more actions from the power-hungry selfish politicians and bold and courageous response by responsible Officers whenever they open their mouth. Moreover dear one pride alone doesn't give security and defend the Nation. Was it not couple of days before when Mr.Anthony admitted that India has only one third of weaponary etc of what it Must have!It scares normal citizen more than give him sense of pride.I am ex-soldier was/am proud of our forces but the way Indian Govt(especially under Congress)had been working sensible people have less to beat the chest with pride. The leaders are to present themselves as models of boldness and courage.Under these gutless traitorous leaders interested only in onething which is how to manipulate people for next elections, people find left in uncertainty and suspicions.Your advise to run out of country,be sure these who comment/criticize are much more proud than you are.To leave they don't need advise from a person like you who is too short-sighted and blind to the facts/realities.We must stay together and united and the same time we must have contradictory ideas through that only we can find some solid solution for all problems. There has to be Pro and Contra but without use of invectives.

Inconsistency in politics and courage by romesh.sharma on 22 Jan 2009

Hey chief aren't you and your forces professional? You and rest of the forces are trained to be professionals to save/protec/guard the Nation against every danger and threat.Aren't you undermining apabilities of own forces and telling in other words they are/were better than your forces?Better keep quite and if you and anybody responsible person opens mouth think many times and still better consult some brainy people. Is it not the simple fact that who so ever attacks another country penetrating through socalled well-guarded borders and kill hundreds people, destroy so much property and create panic in the country, that too with a dozen guys, is/are most professionally trained.Definitely this was joint action of terrorists out-fit and ISI with the knowledge and support of Pak Govt but why the hell this has to said now.Who cares and listens about what Indians say in Pak or anywhere else in the world.India has to fight its own way without much say or propaganda because they see it weekness

The Navy Chief should have resigned if he had any sense of responsibility. As of this time, he has shown himself to be an expert only at name calling

Everyone in India knows, that Pakistan CANNOT be and SHOULD NOT be trusted. And now let us learn that Pakistan does not hesitates when it comes to saying false! Let Pakistani people especially the president, prime minister, the foreign minister say anything, but the truth remains truth, despite they claiming otherwise. This also indicates that Pakistan is destined for its own ruin. A country, state or organization or individual can never sustain for long by not accepting their responsibility, by denying the truth, by supporting their terrorist and terror-camps. Pakistan will, for sure meet its fate!

Pak's doomsday. by Swapan Chakravarthy on 22 Jan 2009

Get the historical facts right. Islam did not exist as a religion in 9BC. And we did not see Pak in a better form except running to US and now we know to China seeking protection from an attack with the alleged obsolete arms.
