Promote gender equality, human rights, say experts

Chandigarh, January 24 A number of functions were held in educational institutes in the tricity on Thursday. The Sociology Department of GGDSD College, Sector 32, organised a talk on “Importance of Human Rights in Contemporary Times” on Thursday. Prof Sherry Sabbarwal, Chairperson of the PU Sociology Dept and Prof P S Jaswal, Director, Rayat College of Law were the key speakers.

Prof Jaswal spoke on the legal aspects in the preservation of human rights, while Prof Sabbarwal stressed on the need for social awareness and mass emancipation vis-ŕ-vis human rights.

Dr Jaswal traced the origin of the legal structure that ensures action against violation of human rights.

Dr Sabbarwal talked about the sociological grounds for preserving these rights. Sabbarwal also discussed issues like promotion of gender equality, fighting eve-teasing, reducing child mortality etc. An interactive session was also held.

GCE-20
Various competitions were organised at Government College of Education, Sector 20. The competitions were held as part of the annual event of the college. Skill-in-teaching, chalkboard writing, on the spot preparation of teaching aids, rangoli, collage making, cartoon making, mehndi competitions were held.

GCCBA-19
An inter-college creative writing competition was held in Government College of Commerce and Business Administration Sector 19 on Thursday. Essay writing, poetry and story writing competitions were held. Nearly 43 students from various colleges participated in the event.
Prof Bhupinder Singh, former principal of GCCBA Chandigarh and Dr Kusum from Government College of Education Sector 20 were the judges. Dr A S Sethi, college principal gave away prizes and certificates to the winners.

SGGSC-26
The Founder’s Day of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26 was celebrated on Thursday. MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was the chief guest at the function. He said that the tenth Guru’s unparalleled heroism, administrative skills, literary pursuits has been a source of inspiration for millions across the world. The Students and Dr Jagir Singh rendered Shabad Kirtan.

Prof studies dept
Parwaaz, a club of students of the Department of Professional Studies organised an educational book fair. Principal S Marriya inaugurated the event. Students and faculty members from various colleges and educational institutions visited the fair. On the spot games were also organised at the book fair.
