Mumbai, February 17: The proportion of migrants in the population of India's financial capital has actually dropped to 43 per cent in 2001 from 64 per cent 40 years earlier, a study said.

The findings of the study, conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences last year, are contrary to the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's rhetoric that Mumbai is being flooded with migrants.

Data from censuses conducted between 1961 and 2001 has been used as part of the study. "Natural increase, like the balance of births over deaths, added to the population more than migration," says D P Singh, from the Institutes Centre of Research Methodology.

The study points out that of the total migrants, the proportion from within Maharashtra dropped steeply to 16 per cent from 27 per cent in the 40-year period, while the proportion of migrants from other states saw a mild drop, from 34 per cent to 26 per cent.

Proportion of migrants from Gujarat has also dropped while that of migrants coming from four southern states has not changed much.

However, the proportion of migrants from the northern states -Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh-has risen, the study said. The proportion of migrants to Mumbai from within Maharashtra is the highest at 37 per cent.

This is followed by those from Uttar Pradesh with 24.3 per cent, Gujarat 9.6, Karnataka 5.8, Rajasthan 3.9, Bihar 3.5, Tamil Nadu 3.1, Andhra Pradesh 2.4, Kerala 2.2 and West Bengal two.

Unity in diversity by Shihab Mohammed on 18 Feb 2008

Each one of us as Indians should strive hard to make our nation advance further and become a global power. It is high time that we start thinking as INDIANS and act as Indians; not as marathis, kannadas, tamils, malayalis. We are Indians gents; and we should be proud of being one. Shed

Linquistic concern by richard on 18 Feb 2008

It is high time we start expecting people to speak the lanquage we speak. Language cannot make us better human beings. It cannot prompt us to serve the state better. Except creating an administration based on corruption, giving us politicians who incite our passions and producing gangs to throw stones at the organized society, language itself does not help us much. It is the quality of our thinking and a mission to serve otherrs that make us better human beings.

Can't argue against Science by Venkat on 17 Feb 2008

Where are all Raj supporters now ? So this migrants issue was all smoke-screen to cover their incompetencies and garner sympathy votes. Now how is Raj going to spin this scientific evidence that migrants have actually decreased ? Come on Raj - where is the press release to refute this evidence ?

Raj T is not against migrants coming to Maharashtra but he wants them to assimilate into local culture and Marathi language

Wrong by Agnivesh Vidyut on 18 Feb 2008

Raj Thackeray and his supporters hate 32,00,00,000 people of UP/Bihar. He says these 32,00,00,000 people of UP/Bihar are filthy and unhygeinic. He says he has no problem with Gujarati, Punjabi or sindhi, he only hates 32,00,00,000 people of UP/Bihar.

I agree with the local culture thing. But what's your point about Marathi Language. Isn't Maharashtra part of Indian Sovereignty. Aren't Hindi and English National Languages ? Its the fault of Maharashtra or any other state to not honor the Sovereignty of India by saying Hindi or English is not good enough for us.

We all have the responsibility to respect local culture by B. B. Goel on 18 Feb 2008

Neither Hindi nor English is national language. We must protect our cultural and linduistic heritage. People coming to mumbia should assimilate into Marathi culture.
