Ludhiana, March 16 Sukhwinder Singh Gill joined as SDM, Khanna, in April last year. Gill has also held the position from 1997 to 2001. Somesh Batta interacts with Gill

* For the last some years Khanna has been facing the problem of crowding on roads. What is being done about it?
We held a meeting with Khanna SSP and a traffic committee is being formed to suggest measures so that the problem can be taken care of. To reduce crowding on GT Road, proposals for four bridges have already been approved by the National Highway Authority of India. Work will start soon. Work on the Lalheeri Road bridge has already started.

* What about other problems like a poor sewerage system and water supply?
Khanna figures in the list of 44 towns which are to be developed by the state government under the Master Town Plan. Apart from taking care of sewerage and water supply problems, this plan will also envisage construction of streets and roads. The Khanna Municipal Council (MC) is doing its best to provide better facilities to its residents.

* Are the benefits of various government schemes reaching those who actually need them?
Money is being regularly disbursed under various schemes like old age pension, handicapped pension, widow pension and shagun scheme. All those who are entitled to such pensions are drawing benefits out of these schemes. Till date, I have not received any complaint about any difficulty being faced by anyone.

* What is being done by the administration to eliminate social evils like female foeticide and drug addiction?
The office of the Child Development Programme Officer is organising various programmes to create awareness among people against these evils. All NGOs working in the sub-division are always welcome to ask for any kind of help from the administration.

* What about the administration’s preparations for the forthcoming Panchayat elections?
A total of 81 villages fall under the Khanna sub-division, which is divided into six zones. A returning officer has been appointed for each zone. As the voters have to cast three votes at a time, for Panchayat, Block Samiti and Zila Parishad, so every voter will be given training.
