Kolkata, July 31 Tension prevailed in the Tata Motors’ small car factory site at Singur, after fresh protests erupted in Bajemelia on Thursday. A group of protestors tried to damage the wall of the Tata factory but their attempts were thwarted by the police.

Security in and around the small car factory has been increased in the last two days. At least, 1,500 policemen have been deployed in the area.

Security arrangements have been made more stringent at the entry points where each and every visitor is frisked and their bags are being checked.

“There is considerable tension in the area after stray incidents of protests. At present, the situation is under control and does not seem likely to snowball into a major crisis,” Sub-Divisional Officer (Chandernagore) Shekhar Roy said.

The Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Raksha Committee will be organising a dharna at the factory site on August 3.

According to sources, there was an undercurrent of tension among the workers and senior technical officers at the factory. Some of the workers had left the factory site, which had slowed down the progress of work.

A section of engineers of the construction firm that has been working for the Tata small car factory had not reported for work due to security concerns.

It was learnt that the protestors had also gone to the mess of technical officers at Kamarkundu on Wednesday night and reportedly threatened the officers. After the incident, policemen have been posted at the mess.

On Wednesday, two people were arrested from Gopalnagar in Singur in connection with the attack on

Manish Khatua, a construction engineer working for the project.
