"Government has been reduced to a charade...It has lost moral legitimacy (to govern)...For survival, Government seems ready to trade off anything," BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani told a crowded press conference in New Delhi.
"For all practical purposes, Manmohan Singh government has lost majority in Lok Sabha...Government should immediately convene a session of Parliament and seek a vote of confidence," he said.
"Credibility of the Congress and Samajwadi Party lies in shambles," the senior BJP leader said, a day after Congress clinched a deal for getting the support of SP, which has 39 members in Lok Sabha, in the event of a confidence vote.
Congress wooed the SP after it became clear that Left parties having 59 members in the Lok Sabha would snap ties with the UPA if Government went ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal.
"Differences between two principal partners of UPA paralysed the Government for the past 18 months," Advani said referring to the stand-off between Government and the Left parties on the nuclear deal.
On Samajwadi Party announcing its support for the nuclear deal, Advani said it was "surprising" to see "two bitter enemies" became allies in a matter of a week.
The impasse over the nuclear deal has led to a realignment of political forces at the Centre, with the Congress clinching a deal with SP which will extend outside support to the UPA government, as the Left parties are all set to sever ties with the ruling alliance.
Referring to I K Gujral succeeding H D Devegowda as Prime Minister in the 1990s, Advani said only the head of the Government changed while the council of ministers was intact.
"In today's case, the Government has opted for a 'leg operation' in its attempts to ensure stability by striking a deal with the SP," he said.

Majority is proven - as nobody seems to listen to the Speaker in LOk sabha during zero hours anymore.
LK Advani, BJP Prime Ministerial candidate is now losing his patience, because he is anxiously waiting to be installed as the next PM of India. Whether his wish will be fulfilled or not, it is the voter who will decide his fate. Immediately, LK Advani should await the democractic process to function in the Parliament during the 'vote of no confidence' when moved.
Brother LK Advani is talking of demcracy. Being the leader of opposition he has right to ask government to prove majority on ground that left has decided to oppose the goverment. The constitution allows only majority party to rule and it seems that UPA has lost the confidence of other supporting group!
Why is this 'young' prime minister in waiting Lal Advani becoming so desprate. Hasn't he and his goons done enough of damage to Indian polity. Had he an his party had even an iota of patriotism in them, they would would have cast asi´de narrow mindedness and supported government on nuclear deal. I agree with SP leaders who say that the most danger at the moment comes from communal forces of which Lal Advani and his protege mass murderer Modi are the greatest proponents. Having been a depauty prime minister and home minister he recently claimed he did not know what foreign minister of his governement was doing during in famous Kandhar episode. And still aspires to be prime minister. May be he should take to jungle instead and take his proteges with hime to make India communalism free.
Dear Mr.Rajiv,I will like to suggest you the book of advani from where you are quoting "kandhar episode"as,there is no mention about his not knowing about what foreign minister was doing...This is a media created story which has all the capabilities of getting an award for cheap fiction. And,please!!! keep up your support for INC(italian not indian) as they are in dire need of that...
I think there is an element of hypocrisy in what Mr Advani has said.He is 'surprised' to see that two known enemies should have become friends in a week and also laments that in order to save the govt. they can 'trade off' any thing'.Well, horse trading has been an essential element of Indian politics and no party can claim that it has not indulged in it ever. Mr Advani seems to forget that 17 parties some of whom are with Congress now, gathered to form government under Mr Vajpeyi.Advani also talks of 'credibility'.But which political party in India has preserved it?He thinks that the govt. has for all practical purposes lost majority and that it must seek a vote of confidence. So it mu must. And there are every chances that if the left does eventually withdraw its support they would. But certainly they are not going to oblige Advani by not trying to save the govt. or resign on 'moral grounds'.The elections are due next year any way.Until then he must control his emotions under control.
deal in trillions-one time in life time-sonia is brighter than rajiv-firing gun from others shoulder-man mohan is ideal for this-ditribute this booty to moulyam, lalyammayam and your others
I wish Indira Gandhi is alive today or atleast BJP can go and find out what is in Vajpayeeji's mind. Advani is no Vajpayee and Sonia is no Indira Gandhi. That is the pity. I am sure that BJP will come back to power, but should they not worry about the country. At what cost would they like to rule this great country? Manmohan should go and meet up with Vajpayee. No more writing off anything for votes. No tax breaks for the rich. Do not allow private guys to make big bucks with our oil, when we are badly hit. I hate to agree with SP on this.
As Mr.Vayalar Rave, govt has the number to prove majority. Then what he and his government waiting for? May be govt does not like to earn respect or is it that "A lie has no legs to stand upon".
adavniji, how about 39 million or 78,or 117 millions or more (depending upon how hard bargainer mulayam is,,,,and on the other hand it is not her money any way !!!!!!besides this N.deal stake is 200 billion dollars, now by indian calculator,,,,,199 billion must be for the "katki"...now,,,what is so big deal in few billions here or there or there or......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes,in a democracy it is a number game and to put an end to this political drama and tamasha going on , Let congress led UPA prove its majority in Parlaiment to prove to the voters and public that they have 273 or more members supporting the Government. If not, President must dissolve the Parliament and ask Election Commission to announce elections for parliament at the earliest. The media has a crucial role to play and must play its part as a responsible and mature fourth estate fit for a mature and responsible country. In the long run, the best remedy is extensive electoral and voting reform so that we do not have dramas and tamashas of this kind making us a butt of ridicule and mockery all over the world. Is this drama fit for a super power aspiring country as ours? Certainly not! The reforms must aim at election of Prime Minister or US-style president by direct voting by voters all over the country and let the PM or President-Elect choose his colleagues or Ministers based on merit
