“The parliamentary strength and the overall unity that was seen in the first term of the UPA are not being displayed in its second term. Since two main parties supporting the UPA at the Centre are fighting each other in the Uttar Pradesh elections, public opinion is that this will affect UPA-2’s term and cause its fall before five years. I am not personally certain if this will have an affect,” he said.
Pawar, speaking at the Idea Exchange organised by The Indian Express Group’s Loksatta newspaper in October, had said that UPA-2’s authority had weakened due to a series of scandals and this had led to other forces, such as the judiciary, asserting themselves.
He mentioned that UPA had regained power due to the good image of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, but the second term had started with controversies surrounding decisions taken earlier and that the scenario changed after the CAG report (on the 2G scam) was tabled.
