Deshmukh has written to the State Election Commission for permission to disburse the amount given that the model code of conduct is in force in the district. “I have the amount with me but I will have to seek the permission of the commission. I will be writing to them to allow us to disburse the amount,’’ Deshmukh said.
Meanwhile, district administration officials said compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh each will be given to the kin of the deceased while Rs 50,000 each will be given to the injured mentioned in the list.
The list was forwarded to the state government by the district administration after the announcement by state election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan that the district collector could seek for compensation in wake of a calamity. “Even though the chief minister was in Pune, he could not make any announcement as it would lead to violation. Besides the ST Mahamandal compensation, the state government will give this additional compensation to those affected in the incident,’’ said an official.
Even as some of the families had refused the compensation, the amount is critical for those undergoing treatment, said the official. The incident took place last Wednesday around 8 am when MSRTC driver Santosh Mane climbed on to a Pune-Satara-Pune bus, hijacked it and sped to the road outside the Swargate ST Depot.
