Guruvayur, January 21: A 'purification' ritual was performed in the famous Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple after a British national entered it despite his claim that he had converted to Hinduism.

The temple thanthri (the traditional high priest) on Sunday ordered 'punyaham' to be performed after it was found that the British national had worshipped in the shrine, where 'non-Hindus' are barred.

According to temple sources, the priest insisted on the ritual despite the foreigner's claim that he had embraced Hinduism and changed his name to Pranavahi.

Though he supported his claim by showing a certificate issued by the Thiruvananthapuram branch of the Arya Samajam, the priests held that as per rules they would accept only the certificate from the Kozhikode branch of Arya Samajam in such cases.

The ban on entry of non-Hindus to major temples in Kerala continues to trigger controversy. Two days ago, top playback singer K J Yesudas, a Christian, had alleged that he was 'insulted' by authorities of Kadampuzha Devi temple in Kerala who refused him entry on religious grounds after inviting him.

The singer, who has rendered hundreds of devotional songs on Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of Guruvayur, has also been barred from entering the temple.

BOYCOT ALL TOP HINDU TEMPLES by rajababu on 23 Jan 2008

IT IS HIGH TIME, THE NEW GENERATION OF (EDUCATED)HINDUS BOYCOTTED THESE TYPE OF TEMPLES, BE IT GURUVAYOOR, BALAJI OR PURI AND BUILD BIGGER AND BETTER REPLICAS OF ALL THESE TEMPLES, OPEN FOR ALL, THAT WILL PUT THESE GUNDA BRAHMINS OUT OF THE JOB AND EVENTUALLY ON THE ROADS

Refuse to allow entry in Guruvayoor by Gopi Krishna on 22 Jan 2008

' AHAM BRAMHASMI ' means God is within. Why Temple authorities do not know this basic Hindu Dharma when they refuse other religious people to enter sanctom sanctorium of Guruvayour temple. People like Yesudas who rendered songs on the lord refused entry... it's amazing to understand the logic of head priest where " God " him self decide to stay in his tongue

purification in temple by R.Subramanian on 22 Jan 2008

They are deviding people in the name of religion. There is no difference between hindu and christian etc for God. Nothing will happen to the Diety inside temple if a non hindu entered a temple.

racism and discrimination by Mangesh P on 22 Jan 2008

Interesting that Indians should complain about racism or religious discrimination abroad when they do the same. As an Indian living in US when I think of discrimination of SC and ST as well as the reverse discrimination of the so called higher caste by imposing seat quotas in education for political reasons India still has not really matured on a global theatre

Dear Mr. Pranavahi

Temple purification by U N Han on 22 Jan 2008

It is high time that the minds of temple priests were purified. A Hindu can enter into a church or mosque and why not a non-hindu enter a Hindu temple.

PURIFICATION OF THE TEMPLE by D. R. VERMA on 22 Jan 2008

I WOULD RATHER WASH THE TEMPLE AND ITS SURROUNDUNGS EVRY TIME THIS SO CALLED HIGH PRIEST EVEN LOKS TOWARDS THIS TEMPLKE. NOT TO SPEAK OF HIS ENTRY INTO THE TEMPLE. hE IS VERY DIRTY FROM WITHIN. hE IS A BIG SHAME TO HINDU DHARMA, WHICH PREACHES "SAVA DHARMA SAM BHAVA"

Krishna was not a Bramhin, Nor a Keralait. by Eternal_Sunshine on 22 Jan 2008

Krishna, as a scripture describe him, was raised in a cowherds family. He lived with them, took the poorest friends like Sudama near his heart. Made friends with mistreated people like Vidur. Just to think of it, he was not a Bramhin. Nor was he a Keralite. I do not find any logic in Puritan Guruvayur Bramhins to claim that Krishna gets impure by people visiting him. It is surprising that these 14th Century bafoons are still controlling the temple. Being a progressive state, Keralaites are accountable for this laggard social conciousness. Maharashtra showed the way back in 16th century when Lord Panduranga was freed from the clutches of the Bramhins and was allowed to be touched by lower cast Bhakt-jana. Kerala needs a social uprising to stop this nonsense.

'Purification' in temple after foreigner's entry by Prakash Kamath on 22 Jan 2008

This is bizarre. I am a Hindu thick and thin, deep-down. However, to not allow a non-Hindu into a temple or to "purify" the temple as described above smacks of high-handedness.

Hinduism is a very inclusive religion... please let it remain so! by Hemant on 22 Jan 2008

This particular case is odd. If the british national produced a certificate of conversion, the priest should have had a little more diplomatic sense than to create an issue like this. He is probably very uneducated. This is the kind of stuff that gives us Hindus a bad name. What is the difference between a certificate from Thiruvananthapuram or Khozikode? Come on? Please somebody answer this question? A Hindu is a Hindu is a Hindu. What he has done is given some people who like to foul mouth Hinduism a toe hold to puke ill things about us.

Shocking !!!!! by Shobhan on 22 Jan 2008

I agree with you my dear. Please someone tell these people he he embraced hinduism what is the issue in it. Pleas eallow people to come under the fold of Hinduism and spread hinduism.

hindu temples by ABHISHEK on 22 Jan 2008

Religions by Joseph on 22 Jan 2008

Thank God for Hindu religion not spread to many parts of the world?!!! As all religions are selfish, Hindu religion is also the most racist of all the religions!!

reply by casualman on 22 Jan 2008

Mr.Joseph. first of all u understand the cause then give your opinion. every religion has flaws, done by individual. how many priest in ur religion doing the baddest thing. try not to blame the religion, it is a mistake of an individual. I can say only hindu religion has got the best of principle of self realisation which no other has

Xenophobia over religion by Eternal_Sunshine on 22 Jan 2008

I absolutely agree with Joseph's observation. Other religions have grown all over the world embracing all the races. Hindu Religion and the religious zelouts keeping the religion to themselves would not do so. Xenophobia at the best.

It is one thing to ask people to take a bath before entering Mandir, another to Discrimination by Sanjay on 22 Jan 2008

Well, we live in modern world and these so called modern Hindus are more of affront to our religion and customs. It is better they be outcaste too having love of non-veg and every vice, like the Rakshas of yore, even the Bunggie, untouchables are more superior in my opinion then these modern trash. Therefore, I will ask the Mandirs as all mandirs should preach Dharma, that all have atmas, all atmas are equal, by quality of person as to what duty is performed, and from ones atma knows god. We must respect people of intellect first because we respect intellect in Hindu society, not because they are superior, but intelligence should lead, but fools, pretenders are there dressed as pandits who never learn, nor teach dharma. As Hindu dharma is being lost by lack of education. By fools, who wish not to teach dharma, but wish for benefits and for their position. Not understanding dharma that even Lord Ram made Ravern’s brother king, also made friendship with monkeys, Bears, Birds. So where is this backwardness in Hindu dharma?

Purification of guruvyaur temple by Guru on 22 Jan 2008

Dear Achu--the CM of keralaEither you should be ashamed of calling Kerala as 100%"literateState" OR Take immediate action on the stupid priests, who do not know Hinduism.Lord Krishna has shown the Globe in his mouth to His mother--UK is also in that world!!

Hindus are hindus, by birth or by adoption by Sanatan on 22 Jan 2008

Kerala, a mad house of castism. Thats what Swami Vivekananda said when he visited Kerala. Todays Kerala reformed a lot, but still a long way to go. All Hindu mandirs are for Hindus, whether he/she is a hindu by birth or by adoption. Today, we have several millions western/European followers of Vedic Hindu dharma, Krishna Consciouness, Yoga etc. We must create an egalitarian Hindu samaj, where no discriminations are allowed. A Hindu is a hindu is a hindu, nothing else. Be by birth or by adoption. Even a non-hindu person who respect and practice Hindu way of worship must be allowed to worship. HIndu dharma is Sanatan Dharma, its purely based on science and reasoning, and not on dogmas like other religions.

Sick by V R on 22 Jan 2008

Only in Kerala. Even after losing nearly half a population to other religions, they are still showing bigatory. These kind of acts give excuses for government and Politicians to step in. Where is public? I wish someone conducts a opinion poll on this.

he should be punished by vishnu on 21 Jan 2008

may be that guy was doing some research related things. he may tried to check what is happening there. but he selected a holy place for that. he should be punished.

foriegner should not be punished by Guru on 22 Jan 2008

Hi vishnuwhy do u want to pundh that foreighner? how can you pressume that he has gone for reseach? Even if he does what is wrong in him doing reserch in "hindu temples". After all he is Hindu "officially??!!

Entry by Raj on 21 Jan 2008

What it is, a short thinking, these guys have to come out of a BOX,there should be no patience to this kind of a nonsense.Where on the earth these kind of people LIVE.The priest should be barred from the temple not the visitor.

Mandirs by anant on 21 Jan 2008

It is ever so sad that in the 21st century of information and global citizenship our mandirs can't accept humans to visit to understand our religion. I have traveled and visited churches in UK,France, USA and Spain,Austria without any hinderence or objections. These are beautiful places of worship and the architecures are fantastic. i have visited many Sikh Gurudwaras without any objections. As a matter of fact I was offered room to stay and see the glory of Golden Temple in moonlight and at sunrise. Is Hinduism so insecure that it can't handle other religions? I wish our priests etc were given more education and made aware of the world around them. What can one say except feel sad at our narrow mindedness and lack of education.

Hinduism by Syam on 21 Jan 2008

Yesudas was not converted to Hinduism. If Yesudas wants to enter Temple, why can't he convert to Hinduism?.If he has sung many songs of Krishna, he might have rewarded suitably for it

Be a Hindu at Heart by eternal_sunshine on 22 Jan 2008

Shyam, first of all... correct the spelling of your name. Secondly, religion is not what you write on your school certificate. Religion is what you follow. A person can follow many religions in a day. while singing Krishna Bhakti, Yesudas sings with a open heart and is a better hindu that you are. Asking someone to convert just because he sings pions to your god is absurd. Does your child get converted to cristian every time she sings jingle bell?

'Purification' after foreigner's worsip;;;; by Vedapushpa on 21 Jan 2008

Orthodox places of worship - the world over and of all Religions have very strict rules as to the access to the main deity or their Sacred books and articles. It is to be noted that such places do not - in the first place allow their own traditionally long-standing followeres and the faithful until and unless they hare duly 'ordained'.So how can it be 'objeted' that the Kerla Guruvayoor Temple or any other traditional Indian Temple considers it sacriligious to let a non-ordained person [ a foreigner is naturally one such] enter the santum sanctorum and even insist on doing the pooja - the ritualistic worship??

'Purification' in temple after foreigner's entry by Vidyadhar Akkaraju on 21 Jan 2008

The idea of barring foreigners into the temples is no doubt a hangover from the British and Muslim rule in India. So much so our protective instincts override all other considerations. Having lived in the USA for the past 30 years, I can now see the growing interest in Hindu (Yoga ) philosophy and several Americans genuinely becoming very pious Hindus. It hurts me deeply that some of these individuals are kept out based solely on their skin colour or country of origin. As long as they respect the deities and customs they should be allowed in and pray.

Mandirs for all Hindus and devotees by Bharat on 21 Jan 2008

Mandirs are for Hindus and devotees, and not for tourists (e.g. some western tourists) and non-devotees. By devotee, I mean those who are not directly come from Hindu stream (by birth or adoption) but they practice Hindu dharma and philosophy (e.g. ISKCON followers, many Omkar Yoga followers, etc).

False Propaganda for Mr. D'Souza by Pragnesh Thakar on 21 Jan 2008

I totally disagree with D'Souza. It's people like him , who have been fooled by others to convert to other religion on those false information that only Hinduism has all such problems. Where in the world these issues which Mr. D'Souza has pointed out doesn't exists. Look at other developed countries where racism is an issue, based on who you are you are either welcomes or ignored and I am talking about 'Developed' counties where 'Hinduism' is not there. One can not change by changing the others. What I am trying to say is that all those issues narrated by Mr. D'Souza to potray the Hinduism as 'DEVIL' and that is by comparing other religious( what so ever) is false propaganda. Hindus of India have been working on fixing the issues related to Caste systems and have made great progesss in doing so and Ms Mayavati, Lalu Prasad Yadav , Mr. Mulayam Singh are good example of that. No other race has accepted change the way Hindu society has accepted the change in the history of mankind. We are moving forward and we need to fight people like Mr. D'Souza who could only see the weak point and try to exploit it. They don't see the brighter side of whole Hinduism who has tolerated everything(including people like him :))

Re: living in olden age by Sachin on 21 Jan 2008

D souza, you have made a good point. Its spot on. That, unfortunately, has been the shortcoming of Hinduism. I hope, as a Hindu, that we all can change that and bring back all the Hindu's who converted to Christainity and Islam for this reason back in the fold of Hinduism.
