Kolkata, February 3 With more and more bright students and mathematical geniuses choosing to study at the IITs and the IIMs, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata is looking for new ways to attract and retain the best students.

In order to do this, the institute has been organising science quizzes at both the school and the college levels in the recent past to make the student community more aware of what the institute offers.

Recently, it organised an inter-college science quiz competition. On January 16, a school-level quiz competition was also organised by the institute.

About 270 students from 116 schools in and around the state capital participated in the competition. The ISI also took the initiative of involving famous quizmaster Derek O’ Brian and his team for organising these events.

“The objective of having a quiz competition is to make the students know more about the ISI,” said Dean of Studies of ISI Bimal K Roy. During the competition, the students got the opportunity to visit the institute. They stayed there for the entire day and were shown the kind of research work being carried out by the institute, added Roy.

The dean further suggested that they are going to make such quiz competitions an annual event to attract more bright students for the programmes being run by the institute. Currently, the institute offers four programmes and admits over 100 students every year. The courses are: Bachelor in Statistics, Masters in Statistics, MS in Quantitative Economics, M Tech in Computer Science and a new programme — M Tech in Quality—that was initiated in 2007.

Roy said that nowadays the students doing their Masters in Statistics (M Stats) from here are getting better job offers.

“We only come to know about the placement stories of the IITs and IIMs, but the M Stat pass outs are being offered packages exceeding one million rupees,” he added.
