Kolkata, June 10 Dimple Sharma, a Central Reserve Police Force constable, on Tuesday stated before the police that an RAF jawan of the Bengal police had hit her with a baton on the election day, May 11 at Garupara in Nandigram.

Swapan Dey, investigating officer of the East Midnapore police, interrogated Sharma in the CRPF camp at Chandipur. Satyendra Kumar, commandant of CRPF, said that investigating officer also interrogated Prem Kumar Ravi, assistant commandant of CRPF. It is also learnt that Dey also interrogated Chakraborty on Sunday over the incident.

Sharma stated that Ravi called lady constables of the CRPF in the afternoon during the poll day to control the situation at Garupara. Earlier, a team headed by Prem Kumar had reached there to look into the law and order situation. But a police party, headed by Debasish Chakraborty, Officer-in-Charge of the Nandigram police station, had also reached the village and intervened into the situation. The police party had allegedly abused the CRPF lady constables. Subsequently, a scuffle broke out between the CRPF personnel and the police, in which an RAF jawan assaulted Sharma. Later, the CRPF had lodged an FIR with the ACJM, Haldia on June 2 regarding the incident. Prem Kumar Ravi had alleged that Debasish had masterminded the assault on the CRPF team.

Arpan Dey, ACJM Haldia, had directed Gaurav Sharma, SDPO Haldia, to investigate into the matter and submit a report. Following the order, the district police handed over the FIR to inspector Swapan Dey of East Midnapore police.

State Home Department had also held an inquiry into the incident. Rakesh Gupta, IG (Western Zone), had visited Nandigram and had interrogated the villagers. He had submitted the report to DG, West Bengal police in the third week of May with the observation that the incident was unpleasant.
