Kolkata, May 18 The Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) plans to introduce semester system to evaluate its students on a regular basis.

“In the post graduate department of drama, we are going to implement semester system from the current academic session,” said RBU Vice Chancellor (V-C) Karunasindhu Das.

“For other streams, we will conduct workshops in a couple of months to decide on the implementation of the semester system,” he added. Towards this end, the university intends to study the experience of Jadavpur University, for having a comprehensive understanding of the semester system.

The university, however, is also facing a dearth of teachers. “We have about 170 teachers for nearly 8,000 students,” said the V-C. The authorities are in favour of having visiting professors rather than increasing the number of teaching posts. “Most of the teachers who are equipped to teach visual arts, dance and drama, do not want a full-time involvement with the university. They can be associated with the universities as guest lecturers and visiting faculties,” he added.
