“The state government should obtain the views of teachers, teachers’ associations, students, experts, academicians and other parties over the issue. Their opinion is vital. It may not be appropriate to introduce English without a compressive discussion. The matter should also be discussed within the Left Front first,” said Goswami at Writers’ Buildings on Wednesday.
Goswami had opposed the state government’s plan to introduce English in the cabinet meeting yesterday and forced the government to put its plan on hold. The state government had earlier announced its plans to start English medium wings in its secondary and higher secondary schools from the current academic session. The plan was to be first implemented in Calcutta schools such as Hindu, Hare, Bethune, Sakhawat Memorial, Ballygunge Government and the BD Government School.
According to the state government, English will be a medium of instruction along with Bengali in state-run schools. The plan was driven by the dearth of professionals in the state, who are conversant with English. It was claimed to have adversely affected the development and industrialisation of the state.
