RSP organises silent rally against Basanti attack

Kolkata, May 15 The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) organised a silent procession on Thursday to protest against the attacks by CPM cadres’ on its supporters at Basanti.

On Wednesday, four RSP supporters were killed in Basanti in South 24 Parganas in the run-up to the polls. In fresh incidents of violence on Thursday morning, four RSP supporters and one CPM supporter were injured.

Around 200 RSP members participated in the procession, which started around 4 pm from the RSP office in Lenin Sarani and ended at the Metro Channel.

“We can also retaliate but we believe in building public opinion,” said RSP leader Manoj Bhattacharjee.

Thursday’s clashes took place at Amjhara, Katalberia, Charbidda in Basanti. In Canning, supporters of both the parties hurled bombs in Gutiarisharif and Narayantala. No casualty was reported.

Police have arrested 32 people from Basanti for causing violence in the area. “Things will not ease even after the elections. Our party secretariat will meet after May 18 to discuss the issue further,” said Mihir Banerjee, a member of the party secretariat.

He also alleged that CPM supporters hurled bombs at RSP supporters in Atpukur gram panchayat and Mohunpur in the Haroa block and the Malancha and Chapali areas in the Minakha block.
