New Delhi Seemingly supporting Army Chief General V K Singh on the age controversy, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has launched a frontal attack on the government for “provoking a confrontation” on the issue.

“We never envisaged a situation where the government on very flimsy grounds would pit itself against the Army Chief, who was forced to drag the government to the apex court for justice,” says the editorial in the latest issue of RSS mouthpiece Organiser.

The article says: “The Army Chief who vowed to cleanse the system and restore the reputation of the Indian Armed Forces has become the fall guy. This is what happens when the system patronises mediocrity and denounces meritocracy.”

The write-up has also sharply criticised Defence Minister A K Antony and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
