Sydney, January 5: Indian cricket team manager Chetan Chauhan described Australia's complaint of racial abuse against Harbhajan Singh as a ‘mind game’ and said the move was aimed at removing the ace spinner from the bowling attack.

Chauhan said Harbhajan had not uttered anything ‘wrong’ during his altercation with Andrew Symonds and the Australians were raking up such issues only because they cannot accept India's new found aggression.

"Harbhajan has not uttered anything wrong. The Australians are playing mind games. We have got the hearing tomorrow and we will argue our case", Chauhan said.

Asked how Harbhajan had reacted to the whole issue, the former Indian opener said, "He is okay. Such things happen on the ground. We are prepared for the hearing."

On Australian opener Matthew Hayden's assertion that Australia have a strong case, Chauhan said," They will definitely say that. He (Harbhajan) has troubled them the most. They would definitely want him out of the bowling attack."

"We also have a strong case. We will back him," Chauhan told a TV channel.

Chauhan said the Australians were not used to teams retaliating to their sledging and were therefore finding it hard to digest.

"In the past, retaliation had not come. The Indians had accepted their sledging. Now they are finding it hard as the Indians have started retaliating," he added.

India in Sydney by John on 12 Jan 2008

I see that India want to back out if the situation doesn't go the way they want. Good idea. They were very disappointing to watch. They were totally outclassed in Melbourne and crumbled within a day in Sydney. Leaving before they have to face an all out pace attack in Perth is probably the kindest thing that could happen.

Racism in Australia ? by L.Y.Rao on 07 Jan 2008

Pontin seems too keen to prove Ian Botham Right when he called them "ex-convicts"...!

Aussie Mind Games by Kris iyer on 07 Jan 2008

Cricket played by the present Aussie team is on the basis of "total war". Mr. Chauhan is correct in describing their tactic of harassing good Indian players as a "mind game". Their conduct in the tests they have played remind me of how 12 year olds cheat in "street cricket" in India, falsely claiming they caught the ball "cleanly", pressurising umpires and batsmen refusing to walk, even after knowing they are out. The Aussies have made sure that cricket is no more a game of gentlemen-sportsmen enjoying themselves while providing enjoyment to others through skill and fair play. The Indian Premier League, I hear, is seeking to sign up some Aussie players. They should wonder now, "if they would lose money through the unpopularity the Aussie team has earned with the Indian Public. Will products the Aussie players endorse be boycotted by the Indian Public?

Walk away from series by ds on 06 Jan 2008

get the second match scrapped because of umpiring fraud or just walk out of the series...

but the bcci by eminem on 06 Jan 2008

I agree with most of the comments made that Harbajan is right and also agree with the manager that this is just a mind game. But I doubt the BCCI will take this matter seriously and am sure they will say that this is just a game. Thats also because they are getting fattened by the money that is poured into the board. Come on India where is your patriotism. I am sure India would have been in a better position had it been ruled by the British instead of lowly and greedy people.

RACISM AND CRICKET by DILIP/HYDERABD on 06 Jan 2008

HARBHAJAN IS CORRECT AND THE AUSSIES ARE REALLY SORE LOSERS .INDIANS SHOULD ALSO FILE A COUNTER COMPLAINT WHENEVER AN AUSSIE SLEDGEScRICKET HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST LOSER DUE TO THIS PRESENT AUSSIE TEAM'S BEHAVIOR AND THEIR UNSPORTMANSHIP BEHAVIOR.TEAMS PLAYINGAGAINST THEM HAVE TO PLAY AGAINST 13 PEOPLE INSTEAD OF 11 !!!! AS THE UMPIRES ARE ALSO PART OF AUSSIE TEAM,OOPS SORRY 14 ADD THE THIRD UMPIRE TOO !!!tHE SECOND TEST MATCH WAS A TOTAL DISGRACE TO TEST CRICKET.ICC MIGHT AS WELL AWARD ANOTHER 16 MATCHES TO THE AUSSIES SO THAT THEY CAN PREEN ABOUT THEIR RECORDS.WHO WOULD WANT TO WATCH SUCH TOTALLY BIASED CRICKET MATCHES

Washing Dirty Linen In Public by Madhusudan on 06 Jan 2008

Australian Cricketers are known to be not good at behaviour. If they are good Cricketers, they need to be good human beings too.Of late, the commentators too are subtly encouraging with remarks that sledging is part of the game.If it is so, then the public is equally interested in knowing what the cricketers utter.A remote microphone may be attached to their shirts. This way the public would exactly hear and know who is the culprit. All these hearings are one sided, and most of the remarks gets under the carpet. In the instant case, It appears from the TV replays show that Symonds provoked Harbhajan to react. Both require punishment if it is proved that objectionable remarks were passed. A strong message would go to all the cricketers that the public appreciates Decency, dignity from these International Cricketers.Andrew symonds appears to be getting into problems as is Harbhajan. So both require to be reprimanded.

Racism Row: 'Australians are playing mind games' by Steve on 06 Jan 2008

I believe that Harbhajan is not guilty. BUt if its found out that ,thats the case then a counter case should be filed against the Aussuies team Captain Pointing and have him band from the games for causing problems for a player , and this shows that he is messing with the whole theym of the cricket game which stands for a "GENTELMANS " game . He should be banned for life and fined 5 years salary to set an example to the rest of the cricket world.I may be harsh but Australia has had a bad repor for doing this every time they play .Join me in getting this done get MORONS LIKE HIM OF THE FIELD.

Harbhajan singh by venkatesh on 06 Jan 2008

If Harbhajan is victimised, the Indian team teamm should return on the same day.

Fight On, India! by S. Darbha on 05 Jan 2008

It has often been reported by British journalists that, in fact, it is the Australian team who were guilty of rampant racism - when touring Sri Lanks a few years ago, for instance. Aussie players were on record even making comments that Sri Lankans were like "baboons" when Sanath Jayasuriya's men huddled together in jubilation after claiming an Aussie wicket.. stuff like that.Racism aside, their SLEDGING on field to gain constant psychological advantage is an open secret which all teams seem to bear silently. But enough is enough. It's time for India to fight back, and Chetan Chauhan and his men are doing - Keep it up guyz, you have our full support!Aussies may be the best Test/ODI team today, but a few members in their team are very sore losers - They don't know how to accept a loss with grace, to admit an opponent's skill with maturity. In their anxiety to get a record string of consecutive Test wins, they're stooping to such despicable mind games - Shame on Ponting and his cronies.

Be bold, assertive and with full of convictions by Bharat on 05 Jan 2008

We Bharatiya must learn how to fight back, when attacked. And not cowed down like wet-cat. Due to our excessive tolerance and peaceful nature, foreigners found us very easy and soft targets. It is we the Bharatiya to blame, we digest insults and accept. We need to give them back with the same coin. That is the way to deal with. MK Gandhi fought back any humiliation in South Africa, and not digested silently. We need to be bold, assertive and with full of convictions.

Harbhajansingh and Chetan Chauhan by Vinod Kothari on 05 Jan 2008

As an Indian I have no doubt that Chetan Chauhan has a valid point. If Harbhajan gets punished by the ICC, then the Indians should immediately return back home cancelling remaining matches in Australia. Have we Indians got the guts to do so?There are still some on the BCCI who will not hesitate to blame Harbhajan. When are we senior Indians going to allow our younger generation to live with pride. If my generation players had to take rubbish from "John Snows" of England and the extreme south african idiots like "Andre Nel" and "Mike Dennesses" of the ICC, we could expect the younger one like Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri and today's Harbhajan Singhs and Souravs to retaliate and show the racists in the cricketing establishment their place. The Indians have clout now, by jove, use it then.

Sledging and Racism by Ravindra on 05 Jan 2008

Symmonds seems to be complaining of Racism at the drop of a hat.Looks like he seems very insecure even though he is playing extremely well. Why would Harbajan have to make racist remarks against Symmonds or any other cricketer? He was just saying that "Australians seem to be liking our Bowlers, dont you like me, I am also a bowler" or something to tha effect per Tendulkar.I dont see anything racist here.Symmonds doesnt seem to have any sense of humor as well and intreperts everything in terms of racism.Back in late 70s or 80s, someone from the Australian side asked Iam Botham, "How are your wife and my kids".Australians have been sledging from for last 30 years at least.
