Amritsar/Chandigarh Activists of a radical Sikh outfit on Tuesday blocked trains and buses in Amritsar to enforce the Punjab bandh called by them to protest alleged inaction against the 1984 riots accused, disrupting rail traffic on the busy route and leaving many passengers stranded.

The activists of Dal Khalsa and some other outfits blocked the tracks, delaying the movement of many trains including the Shatabdi Express, Sachkhand Express, Paschmi Express, Super Fast, Dadar, Kathiar Express and Tata Mouri.

An official said all the trains were postponed and would run after 11 am.

A senior officer of Ambala Division said in Chandigarh that a number of long distance passenger trains running on the Delhi-Amritsar and Delhi-Jammu section were affected due to the blockade of tracks between Rajpura and Shambu on the Ambala Ludhiana mainline section.

A number of trains have either been cancelled for the day or terminated short of their destination due to the blockade, he said.

A number of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir bound trains were being terminated at Ambala and other stations in Haryana.

Activists of Dal Khalsa also did not allow any Punjab Roadways bus to move out from the Amritsar main bus stand.

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at the Amritsar Railway Station and bus stand.

Gursharn Kaur, who along with her six family members was scheduled to leave for Delhi by the Shatabdi express lamented that she would not be able to make it to the national capital in time for her flight to Mumbai and then to USA.

The affected trains include New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express, Amritsar-New Delhi Inter City Express, Amritsar-Hardwar Jan Shatabdi Express, Dadar-Amritsar Express, Howrah-Amritsar Express besides a number of passenger trains.

Road traffic was also disrupted at many places in the state, including on the Chandigarh-Ropar National Highway.

Initial reports said markets were closed at some places.

On October 23, Dal Khalsa supported by the Khalsa Action Committee, had given a shutdown call for Tuesday to register its protest against the killings of thousands of Sikhs in 1984.

Chairman of Shiromani Panthic Council Manjit Singh Calcutta said, "25 years have passed but the country's justice system has failed to bring the perpetrators to book".

Head of another hardline outfit, Gaini Baldev Singh asked the people of the state to close down their business establishments, shops, banks, industry and transportation in memory of all those who were killed during the carnage.

Who Speaks for Hindus and Moderate Sikhs Killed by Khalistanis? by Desi on 07 Nov 2009

So much outrage for 3,000 Sikhs killed and Madam Gandhi herself. Very appropriate. But everybody seems to have forgotten what caused both the incidents. Khalistani terror was definitely not a creation of Indira Gandhi since she had one and only one meeting with dissident Akali leader Bhindrenwale. She had no role in his transformation as terrorists. What about those who sheltered, trained and comforted the terrorists in Delhi and elsewhere. Who cares for the Hindus that were dead. Terrorists just drove by in Delhi and shot the fathers who are the breadwinners of the family. Where is the outrage for the orphans. Don't Hindus count for people? Where is the justice for those families?

Where is your consience ? by kulmohan on 06 Nov 2009

Those who demand justice for 1984 riots are not 'Radical Sikh groups'(as the author chose to describe them) but people who still have some measure of consience left in them. Most Indian journalists have allowed their consience to be subdued selectively. Thus you could find them taking up the cause of justice for Jessica Lal or Nitish Katara whilst delibrately ignoring the cause of justice for 1984 riot vicitms (read sikhs) at the same time. I am not sure, whether it will move the hearts of you journalists even if I recall here the way sikh men and women were burnt alive by forcing a burning tyre down their necks right in front of their family members eyes. O God! if only you had eyes to read this and a heart to feel the pain of sikhs, but they tell me you are formless so you wouldn't have eyes and you wouldn't have a heart and thus India may continue to be Injustful to the sikhs in the way it has been for the last 25 years.

PUNJAB BANDH by NIRANJAN on 05 Nov 2009

IT GOES TO SHOW THAT WHEN A FEW PEOPLE DO SOMETHING VERY EVIL, STUPID AND THOUGHTLESS, THE REPURCUSSIONS ARE FELT BY THE COMMUNITY, STATE AND THE COUNTRY. UNFORTUNATELY THOSE PEOPLE WHO COMMITTED THE CRIME BEAR NO SENSE OF GUILT OF THE THOUSANDS OF LIVES LOST AS A RESULT OF THEIR THOUGHTLESS ACT!

Was Gandhi Radical? by Sane Voice on 03 Nov 2009

If the Sikhs who are looking for justice are radical then Mahatma Gandhi must have been a radical since he used similar methods to fight for justice. He used to go and lie down on rail tracks and in the middle of the roads to disrupt the British rule. If IE or who ever called these Sikhs radical can find any differences between Gandhi method and Sikh method please reply. As usual Indians are hypocritical about what suits them what does not.

CONGRESS THE CULPRIT by prem seth on 03 Nov 2009

THE CONGRESS LEADERS RESPONSIBLE FOR SIKH RIOTS SHOULD BE BOUGHT TO JUSTICE N THE CONGRESS SHOULD FORMALLY APOLOGISE TO THE NATION WHICH WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CARNAGE.

Radical Sikh outfit dalls for Punjab ....... by n.r.i.(oz) on 03 Nov 2009

GOOD ON YOU R.J.Bhatia! If the Sikhs start this Khalistan campaign again, it will only result in a FURTHER SUBDIVISION of India which will only HELP Pakistan/China to DESTROY India!! (Which these two countries would gladly do!)The Sikhs should remember : UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL!!

Taliban Singh by Jai on 03 Nov 2009

True, 1984 riot victims have got no justice from the system. But sikhs are no exception. There are people from different walks of life, hindus, muslims etc who suffer daily at the hands of powers-that-be. Naxalites are also holding up trains. But when the sikhs do, it pinches. One, India owes a lot to Sikh Community. Two, they are so susceptible to ISI's game is painful. Three, the people protesting today are the people because of whom, common sikh suffered a backlash. They seem to conveniently forget, countless killings by Bhindranwale and his ilk. The names like Avtar Singh Brahma, Gurbachan Singh Manochahal, Manpreet Singh Chaheru, Sukhha Sipahi, Sukhi(s), Surjit Singh Penta, hatjindar Singh Jinda, etc were killers of innocents. Even today, Wasan Singh Jaffarwal, Paramjit Singh Panjwar etc are still enjoying ISI's hospitality in Pakistan. They are nothing but what the Taliban are doing in Af-Pak: Playing the ISI ball without realising that it is the Sikhs/Taliban who get bad name.

Who are those ? by chanakya on 03 Nov 2009

No common man is behind these time wasting exercises. It is the group of political disgruntled elements and few unemployed youth who conduct such drills year after year. Most families in India are touched by one or the other form of voilence. But that doesn't mean even after 25 years we still keep carrying the pain with us. There is a limit for every thing and security agencies must tackle these disturbances which disrupt normal life for several others who might not even connected with these events.

Natural Reaction by R J Bhatia on 03 Nov 2009

Mr Iyer is forgetting or trying to hide the events of those days. Nothing happens without any back ground. Killing of Sikhs started just after the sitting PM Indira Gandhi was killed by her own Sikh guards. The events were unfortunate but quite natural.

Natural Reaction by Vikram Singh on 03 Nov 2009

I guess then killing of hindus in punjab after 1984 was also a natural reaction ? so was kanishka bombing ?

Desha Bhakta by jk on 03 Nov 2009

Live and Let Live Sardarjee!!! Let us forget and be civilized human. Mrs. Gandhi is long gone. There is no need to prolong this fight. There is no reason to roam with Sward in the streets or Railway stations. Please calm down and go and Pray Gurugranth Sahib. Jai Ho !!! Bole so nihal !!! Raj Karega Khalsa Baki Rahe Na Koi !!! Come on now Peace !!!

Punish the culprits not the Sikhs by shyam kishore on 03 Nov 2009

Sikhs have been an integral part of india and they are the most brave sons of this country .There is no question of any sikh breaking india . However the rest of India has done injustice to this community by letting the 1984 massacre culprits go unpunished . we must understand the sikh anger here and bring those culprits to the books

1984 by harkirat joshi on 03 Nov 2009

what happened in 1984 was indeed barbaric and its never late to ensure justice to the victims.its wake up call to the govt of india.ironically, causing inconvenience to the innocent public is against the tenets of sikhism.

Sikhs grievences should be addressed by anand iyer on 03 Nov 2009

It is really a pitty that the real culprits behind 1984 Sikh massacre went unpunished. Sikhs are really a pride and jewel for India. They are a community who have high amount of self respect.Even though numerically small their achievments and contributions for this country is really great.Yet they are being brutally hunted and killed in thousands on that fateful days in 1984 by congress goons, the so called secular party. But not a single neta got punishment by judiciary and cases are being dragged for decades.Shame on our country.

Can you write your comments with some responsibility ? By tone you sound disguised cross border terrorist.

Are You Mad by Sane Voice on 03 Nov 2009

From your comment you seem to be a member of VHP/RSS or some other fanatic organisation. Anand Iyer is quite right in what he said but you,Sakthiman, are talking rubbish.

response by SKDBA on 03 Nov 2009

Dear SAKTHIMAN, I can not understand how did you assess comments of Anand Nayyar without resposibility. His curiosity regarding justice for 1984 victims should be addressed.

sikh or indian by ramesh on 03 Nov 2009

on the pretext of sikh you cannot be terrorists, if they are pride then who imprted the word terrorist to india? all religions should be banned immidiately in india

Secular India by R J Bhatia on 03 Nov 2009

India is worlds largest democratic country. Members of all faith are allowed to observe their practices in peace and harmony. Unfortunately Sikhs in the 1980s adopted a different course. They wanted to make a country for Sikhs only just like Pakistan for Muslims. They forgot that this time there were no British around to support their cause of breaking India. My friendly advice for Sikhs is be a part of this great civilization and donot try to weaken our country. This is not 1947. India is one of the super powers at this time of human history. And anyone thinking of breaking India will have the same fate as of Pakistan these days.

India is not just for Hindus by Vikram Singh on 03 Nov 2009

If India means land of only hindus then sikhs , muslims should oppose it.

Grouse of Sikhs by Kuldeep on 03 Nov 2009

Respected Bhatia Sahab. This is infact not a matter of separate country or terrorism, this time as it was in 80s, but the gouse is against the inaction of the Govt., who on the one hand ask stern action against Gujarat lapse and on the other hand forget all together in this case.
