An upbeat Congress General Secretary said that the NDA existed only in the mind of the BJP and not on the ground and confidently asserted that the saffron party will sit in the opposition.
At an hour-long press conference ahead of the fourth phase of polling on Thursday, Gandhi said the Congress would do better than in the last elections when it got 145 seats on its own.
"After elections, all options are open. ...We have always been open to post-poll alliances", he said at the media interaction, the third in the series, in which he had some good words for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu.
"I respect Naidu. He has done a good job....may be he focused on Hyderabad . I am not saying (only we have leaders) There are leaders who are in the opposition. Nitish for example ....I think the intention (to work) is there," he said replying to a question whether non-Congress governments are not doing well in the matter of development.
Earlier in the press conference, Gandhi said that Nitish Kumar's JD-U and Jayalalithaa's AIADMK, who were or are part of the NDA, were now facing the question (of options) because the NDA is "finished" throughout the country and was existing only in namesake.
"Nitish Kumar, Jayalalithaa and many like minded parties are feeling that the NDA is not winning. After elections all options are open".
Gandhi was sure that the Congress would form a government. "But in a democracy, if it so happens, we have no choice," he said in reply to a question whether the party was ready to sit in the opposition.
Asked about post-poll tie-up with the Left parties, he said there were ideological differences but there were also a lot of common points.
"....on a lot of concepts we agree with the Left like education and health. There is a lot of meeting ground with the Left. There is absolutely no meeting ground with BJP for what they did in Gujarat and Karnataka and burnt Christians in Orissa. There is a lot of common ground to do with the Left. There is a reasonable amount of common space," he replied.
"I am pretty confident that the Left will support a Manmohan Singh government. I am confident that the Left would rather have a Congress Prime Minister", he said adding "the field is open to post-poll alliances".
Asked whether the Congress would compromise on its Prime Ministerial candidate if the Left was not ready for Manmohan Singh, Gandhi said "Singh is the best Prime Ministerial candidate for the country. The Congress does not compromise on its thinking which it showed on the nuclear deal."
Saying his views on the Left was his personal, he said he did say that the Left had old ideas -- 20 to 30 years old view on nuclear deal -- and integration with global economy but he was confident that the Left would be forced to accept that the world has changed.
Asked if Congress would support the Left parties, which had supported the UPA for over four years, in forming the government, Gandhi appeared to be sarcastic when he said "we will consider that if the Left gets 180-190 MPs. We will consider them. I hope they are able to achieve that. If they do, I will be first person to say let us support Left".
Similarly, when asked if the party would back Sharad Pawar as Prime Minister, Gandhi said, "If the NCP becomes the biggest party in India then that option is open."
He dismissed as "figment of media's imagination" suggestions that the allies of Congress are not favouring Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister.

Rahul is looking forward too rigidly and too exculisely to the future ,the future that may never come.He has forgotten that he is to yet know a lot about indian politics and making alliances especially those with entirely different agenda and philosophy,is most tactful job which is far beyond his calibre, both politically and intellectually.Inconsistency itself is dangerous to Partyx and ultimately hinders national progress.Just couple of days back the PM and his mother,Sonia, was all against Communists and refused any further coalition with them and now having seen remote chances from other parties he is wooing communists. What for a shameful and lowest level of politics. What for a Govt they can form when any small party can black-mail for its convineances or btreal away the Govt. This guy has learnt only to tell lies and provoke people. He is zero and being glorified by IE while he is worthy to be mentioned any where in a serious news bulletin.
Simply put Karat bros and Sis need not make such a big noise about forming next Govt. If anyone applys simple common sense to work in highest office in country you need experience and exposure for working across the country not in West Bengal
Rahul is going from bad to worse. First he took over the onerous responsibility of giving good conduct certificates to MMS, and now he is the self appointed negotiator from Congress trying to woo the Left who keep on kicking his party
This is not democracy. How does a voter know at the time of voting whom he/she is voting. Parties can get votes on one pretext or the other and then sell them to the highest bidder.
When the truth of BJP is revealed then BJP's paid to write commentaters get busy. BJP is a party with a diffenence and the difference is, that they committed every kind of irregularity when they were in power. And they even mixed religion and politics like osama bin laden. BJP is the party which has damaged our Hindu reputation in the entire world. We Hindu's normally come from well cultured houses and our elders have always thaught us to respect every creation of God as God itself, but since the BJP came into the religious market it has tarnished our Hindu image. I will never trust taliban and BJP because their aim and objects are similiar.
Hello "Mr Mixture of many countries" then why congress contested elections in Keral, Westbengal, Andra, Bihar etc states, to whom you are trying to fool, those days have gone your half family have already fooled indian public for 5 decades now people are wise enough to undestand meaning of your false slogans.
2009 Elections will be most remembered for political parties being very blatant about their oppurtunistic nature and hunger for power. This trend started with the NDA where 20 odd parties with little in common got to-gether to form an alliance, which ran for 6 years. In 2004, they tried to repeat it. It failed primarily because of the 1) grand alliance in TN which where all seats went to the unborn UPA
I went through many of these comments, I found as if these BJP stooges are in middle of a Essay writing competition. Every body is crying foul for the politics of Rahul. What will he do? He can only do politics or talk politics at a time of election. He is doing that. Probably, BJP got hurt by Rahul's good grasp of politics and his nonchalant way of dismissing journalistic salvos. You people hone your writing, it will come handy in writing obituary of BJP.
The party with a difference hates but apes taliban, it is like HEADS I WIN TAILS YOU LOSE
i dont think that Congress will need the backward thinking left this time to rule india. This time it will be a surprise for every BJP guys. The Congress will cross the 200 mark this time and all other smaller parties will stick to congress rather than being extinct by the international players.. all the best for the wishful thinkers of BJP but their day dreaming will come to an end by 16th may 2009...sad part is that this day dreaming by BJP losers will continue till 2014 again !!
I do not know, whether Congress will win or lose elections. If they lose - 30% of credit for the loss should be given to Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. If you do not know what to say, how to say and when to say, just keep your mouth shut - My generous tip to both the great Orators of COngress
Politically walking dead party is now shamelessly cosying upto the insidious commies, to purge India again with their discredited and demeaning bankrupt policies and agendas.Shamelessly grovelling to their shady and tainted masters,to cling to power and glory, through sheer marriage of convenience with the devil. If the horse trading prevails, that would be the death knell for the poor, the marginalised, desstitutes and poverty reduction.India does not deserve another 5 yearsof economic mismangement, corrupt governance, malignant and corrosive policies, hypocrisy,no economic growth, no dvelopment, no job creation and poverty reduction.India needs a brak from these ineffective wafflers. So much to cheat beating and boasting of Congresses rennaisance??????
Rahul and Co are very keen in having an old and ailing man as PM, and one wonders why??History repeats itself.Nehru dropped and Indira moved it.Indira dropped and Rajeev became PM, and now poor Manmohan Sing????
Let left keep away from supporting congress. Let Non congress parties form the next govt.. Then common people will realise that Congress govt. is best fit to lead India under the leadership of either Manmohan or Rahul.
YES, THIS PATHETIC FAMILY WILL DO ANYTHING TO STAY AND HOLD TO POWER. IF THEY DON'T , THEY WILL LOSE BILLIONS OF DOLLORS FROM BRIBE AND CORRUPTION.THEY ARE EVEN TRYING TO WOO NITISHKUMAR FROM BIHAR AND TO DROP SCAM MASTER , JOKER LOLOO AND CO.LEFT ONLY AIM IS TO KEEP INDIA AS UNDEVELOPED COUNTRY SO RED COMMIES CHINA BENEFIT, WHICH CORRUPT CONGRESSWALA DON'T MIND AS FAR AS THEY ROB COFFERS OF INDIAN STATE .THEY WANT RAUL VINCI TO BECOME P.M. AT ANY COST AND RUIN THE COUNTRY.
RG has accepted that forget congress even UPA is not going to win adequate seats thats why he is looking for JD-U and Jayalalitha's support. I think their loyal IB has informed them very late about the performance fiasco of congress in the elections.
To talk of left and right makes no sense in the Indian context. That it has been going on as a fashion in the press and in the view of our political analysts does not prove its absurdity in India. Partymen and leaders keep changing colours transcending the supposed right/ left boundaries. For Rahul to talk of confidence of winning future support of 'left' in government formation there is therefore no sense. If anything, it reveals his immaturity, if not it, then his hypocrisy. For long ago, Mahatma Gandhi who nurtured and grew that party (sorry, I mean its original version, which has nothing to do with its present incarnattion), threw up his hands in despair when many Congressmen just wearing a Khadi cap and dress, were not that, and they were too many. -- Gandhi wanted no political party can deliver goods even if voted on majority! To cut short this, WE MUST HENCEFORTH TRY AND MOVE FOR A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT WITH POLITICIANS REPRESENTING ALL THEORETICAL IDEOLOGICAL COLOURS.
It is becoming increasingly clear that no party or a coalition will be anywhere near the majority figure. The UPA at best may score around 200 seats and the NDA between 170-180 leaving the rest to the Third, Fourth Front and others. The sixth phase of elections will start from May 17 and alliances will change like a drop of the hat. In the process, people who elect a particular alliance against a party will be made to look like fools watching helplessly as to how their mandate is being subverted to suit the politicians petty interest. It is this demoralization and apathy which was evident during the third phase when the Country registered a poor voting percentage. People were in general vexed with the whole set up which has no honesty, transperency and accountability. Yet, it will be the Politicians who will be having the last laugh and those victors in Mumbai will be shamelessly claiming that the people were behind them when the fact is more than 60% die not bother to vote.
Rahul and his Congress party want to remain in power at any cost. If they think left is best option for support why not congress party hand over prime minister seat to left? When they still need support of left, why his mother ( boss) is sharing seat with trimnool congress(Mamta)? Its just shows that Rahul and congress co. playing and speaking double for sake of KURSI.
elections are not yet over. Results are not known so if the young one is talking about left and splitting NDA, you can imagine what will happen after the result. One thing is clear. Congress has lost the elections. So all this is drama. It is now clear that Congress is a dynastic rule. No body not even MMS has any say.If a party general secretary is talking about all policy matter even with a CWC or parliamentary board meeting or any such thing, then u can get an idea of what kind of party it is. If all the politicians of allparties understand this, they should make it a point to see that congress does not be a part of any govt, because it is very dangerous for a undemocratic party to rule this country. This one reason is enough. or else, very soon you can see the repeat of Emergency days...........
In West Bengal and Kerala, he has seriously damaged the reputation of communists by criticising them as corruption agents, forces against development, forces encouraging arson, violence and killings. How come, he has seeking their friendship in Delhi? Is this politics ??
Plitically dead walking party, bereft of any morals and principles are shameless groveliing to the devils, for the lust of power and ego. What happened to all the tall boasts and chest beating that Congress will win it outright.Soon will be made to eat humble pie and straw. By all account BJP will embark as the bigest Party in the Parliament. If Congress and the insidious Commies do decide to shack up a marriage of convenience, it will be death knell for the poor, the marginalused, dvelopments, good governance, economic growth and job creation. Another 5 years of mailgnant, coorosive, corrupt, mismanagement and inept governance will ruin India completely and totally.India deserves a break from the cretins.
Rahul Gandhi, he is a born stupid and he always talks stupidity. Who cares this stupid ? Whenever he visits kerala and Bengal, criticising them very vulgarly and sharply. But he now needs support of Left to keep his mom 'Rajmata' of India again. Sorry beta, this time we left never ever support you and your mom. Even If there is situation to support BJP we do that.
It isnt surprising that Rahul believes in support from left parties because left always think about to avoid a Bjp lead gov than congress lead government. After result left will prevent all possibilities to form NDA gov.But the main obstacles betweem left and congress are Nuclear deal with USA and weapen deal with Israel. But If BJB form a gov ,nuclear deal USA and foreign policy with Israil will be more strong than UPA gov. But there is not a least possibility a third allience gov.
