Manmohan Singh

New Delhi Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hailed Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for doing a ‘competent job’ at a short notice, saying the Railway Budget will make train travel an ‘enjoyable experience’.

"She (Mamata) has prepared a budget which does not impose burden by way of increase in freight charges or passenger charges," Singh told reporters outside Parliament shortly after the Railway Budget 2009-10 was presented in Lok Sabha.

"At the same time, she has, in keeping with our Government's election promises, focussed her attention on passenger amenities like security and safety of rail travel, making it an enjoyable experience," he said.

Singh said the Railway Minister has mentioned a large number of facilities by way of using innovative financial mechanisms like public-private partnership (PPP), "to improve railway production and to finance more investment".

"I, therefore, compliment her for a competent job she has accomplished in shortest available time," he said.

After railway, we need to improve on our airplanes, airports, and air services by Dr. Divyesh Raythatha on 04 Jul 2009

Mamta Bannerjee has come out with really a good railway budget. It takes care of poor and needy people. She also plans for new trains. I fail to understand what does she mean by world class stations. Today, most of the developed countries use airplanes, cars, like means for travelling. They hardly think of developing new trains or railways and train stations. They develop most modern airplanes, airports, cars with latest technology, and comforts with safety. If an underdeveloped country claims that they have excelent, modern bullock carts or highest number of bicycles, it is not a prestigeous issue. It is o.k. that we need trains because very few people can efford to travel by air and use cars. I think, our government should start claiming of world class, international levels only if it is a comparable issue with other countries. Actually, we need to improve our overall standards of Air India, Air India Express and International Airports in Ahmedabad and other places.

Does it make any difference to you by freddie9(Indian) on 03 Jul 2009

Does it make any difference to you because most of the time you are in the plane. So why bothered, Whatever the profit comes from the railway income take the money and put in non-profitable organisation like Air-India. Most of the Industry run by the is not making any profit because most of the politican are not paying when they are travelling whether it is railways or Aircraft.
