New Delhi Railways have posted a nine per cent growth from freight traffic between April and October this year, earning more than Rs 32,000 crore from the segment.

The Public Sector Undertaking behemoth generated Rs 32,216 crore during the seven month period from this segment as compared to Rs 29,555 crore it earned during the same period last year, thereby registering a growth of nine per cent, a railway spokesperson said.

The railways carried 501.28 million tonnes of commodity freight as compared to 467.97 million tonnes it carried during the corresponding period last year.

In October alone, railways earned Rs 4801.95 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic, the spokesperson said.

Out of this, Rs 1811.55 crore came from transportation of 32.08 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 773.14 crore earned by transporting 11.94 million tonnes of iron ore for exports.

Some of the other commodities that generated good revenue for railways were pig iron, fertiliser, food grains, petroleum products and cement among others.
