New Delhi Fresh from a ride on Japan's famed bullet train, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Monday said his ministry was in the process of appointing global consultants for introducing the high-speed trains on certain routes.

"The day is not far off when the bullet train will run in the country," Prasad told reporters.

"We are in the process of appointing global consultants for introducing bullet train on certain routes," he said.

About the possible routes for running such trains, he said "we are examining the possibilities of running it on some routes including Mumbai-Ahemdabad, Delhi-Chandigarh and Delhi-Patna".

During his visit to Japan last week, Prasad had got a first hand experience of the fast trains travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto at a speed of about 300 km per hour.

Asked about his bullet train experience, he said "It was very good. The bullet trains are well managed in Japan."

Meanwhile, the Railways have invited global tenders for conducting pre-feasibility study of high-speed train corridor on the Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar route.

The study will focus on technicalities, financial and operational viability of the project, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

Besides the Delhi-Amritsar route, the Railways have decided to conduct pre-feasibility studies for four more high-speed passenger routes.

The routes are Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Hyderabad-Dornakal-Vijaywada-Chennai, Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulum and Howrah-Haldia.

This is like a dream come true for India when Lalu made this statement .But after that there is no new news about it.India is growing economy that really require a haih spped train .But i think need to wait for this dream untill some one will not execute this plan. When people are talking about new genreation technology we have to put step with the world .Now its more than enough to travell in speed of 80-110 Km/h .Feeling some thing odd when we are talking about this particular area we are very lacking from the long distance from others countries .Now w ehave to go for it . Long Live India .

India should start bullet trains here, preferably for the below-500-km-route, e.g. Delhi-Chandigarh, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Bangalore-Chennai etc. Travelling between these places by air is absolutely ridiculous, considering that the minimum waiting time of 2 hours is mandatory these days due to security reasons. This would provide cheaper, faster and more convenient travel for short distances like mentioned above.

I feel India should start its project of Bullet train, instead of wasting money in improving the bull shit present railway system

Bullet train by Raj on 22 Jan 2009

I fee India is not ready for bullet trains yet. We need first maintain the existing coaches well. I travel by train very frequently. Now a days there are more cockroaches and insects than the passangers in the compartments. India needs to upgrade the signalling system on a larger scale which will improve the on time arrival and departures. Instead of bullet train, we can introduce more trains, more platforms/satellite railways stations to accomodate more trains and doubling of tracks on all major routes etc. which will have direct benefit to the common citizens of India. Hence concentrate on more cleaner stations, clearner compartments, platform extns., more coach formation, power full traction, ----- bullet will automatically role into India. Lalu should postpone this plan.

Time has come to introduce Bullet trains in India as they save precious time and will certainly help in reducing the congestions from the Indian sky. They will help in improving our environment too. At the same time its economic viability has also to be onsidered as we are a poor and developing nation.

Bullet trains should wait. Modernization and the upgrade of existing coaches for passenger convenience, safety and comfort, double tracking, laying of new rail tracks to hitherto inaccessible sectors etc. still lag very much behind other developed nations.Seeking status symbols may be a way of declaring India's arrival as an economic super power but the country is not in a position as yet to afford the luxury of bullet trains.Extending the railway network to cover all parts of India ought to be the priority that should occupy railway planning.

I prefer the railways pay attention to increasing the trains and upgrading the compartments. by Ayyappa on 20 Jan 2009

Bullet train in India! It will defenitely invoke curiocity in the minds of citizens.I was tempted to rejoice on this news. It is a good mode of travelling fast from city to city. But you must think at what cost? Bullet trains are very expensive to start and to operate. In a vast country like ours where we do not have enough trains to cater to the needs this proposal is over ambitious. There are more urgent priorities like upgrading the design of the compartments, facilities on board. I still remember a couple of years ago there was this photo of a person trapped in the train hurt and alive. We could not save him as we do not have the rescue equipments. As we can see there are more urgent necessities and priorities which need the railways attention. We can have the bullet train some time later in the future. I will always suspect given Lallu's corruption track record, he might have seen an opportunity to earn more money in foreign curriencies.

After turning roads of Bihar as smmoth as Hema Malini's Cheeks, Lalu now dreams of Bullet Trains! He could not even run a state, and now he wants to be PM! God save us!

Bullet Train by Anand on 19 Jan 2009

I just love laluji. Kudos! Hope one day he becomes our PM and handles those Pakis in a language they understand!

He is jihadi sympathiser and he may build terror camps for Pakistan in Indian soil.As far as bullet train is concerned, we already have enough bomb trains.

Bullet is not possible in India by Bipin Mehra on 19 Jan 2009

Lalu is talking through his hat. I am an ex-senior executive from Indian Railways and would like to inform Laluji that there are certain serious probems in running a Bullet here in India which are difficult to tackle. For example, a Bullet cannot be run unless the railway track is completely fenced off and secured, but our railway track is a haven for cattle and humans also use it for bicycling and walking, particularly in UP

stumbling blocks towards development by s thulasidharan on 19 Jan 2009

thank goodness that you are ex now. Or else Mr. Lalu had to fence you aswell to bring the bullet train.

Bullet Trains for India by Dr. Paras Deo on 19 Jan 2009

Let the Bullet trains roll ! Bullet trains will environment friendly and will actually save a lot of time. One will not have to taxi to the airport, which are generally outside town, hours in advance. one will not have to wait for the luggages. the trains are more comfortable and thy are form city-centre to city-centre. I can only congratulate Lalu Prasad Yadav for taking this decision and hope these train are introduced as soon as possible. In Europe , the fast trains have proved to be a boon to the travellers. In India, with one of the largest railway structure this will be a massive boost for the infra-structure.
