The rainfall in the last 24 hours has resulted in waterlogging in several parts of the city. The rains came off as an unpleasant surprise for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials. The showers innundated not only the low-lying areas of north Kolkata and Behala, but also central and south Kolkata including BBD Bag, Dharamtala, Park Street, Burrabazar, Rashbihari Avenue, Chittaranjan Avenue, Bidhan Sarani, College Street, Keshab Sen Street and Amherst street were waterlogged.
"Due to the topography of the city we can't prevent water-logging. But we are trying our best to make the stagnant water flow down as fast as possible," said Chowdhury. The MMI-C had initially denied that there was any waterlogging in central Kolkata.
There will be no respite from waterlogging for Behala residents this monsoon, owing to the ongoing KEIP sewerage project. "We were unable to clear the water in Behala due to the KEIP project. But in the other areas, the outflow of water was very fast. So, there was no waterlogging in the city," added Chowdhury.
Drainage department officials are, however, apprehensive about this monsoon not being any different from the previous ones. The choked drains of the city are actually overflowing.
The rainwater is flowing down the roads and localities instead of the drains.
