Lucknow With Raj Babbar winning the Firozabad Lok Sabha bypoll, Congress termed it as a "beginning" of people's faith in the party in Uttar Pradesh and said it will form the next government in the state.

"I congratulate people of Firozabad who gave a decisive result. This is the beginning of people's faith in Congress. We are confident that Congress will form a government in UP after the next assembly polls," AICC General Secretary in charge of UP Digvijay Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the next electoral battle in the state will be between Congress and BSP. "BJP and SP are nowhere. BJP's base has been eroded and SP is nowhere," he said.

The Congress leader, however, downplayed poor performance of the party in the assembly bypolls, in which it won only one seat out of the 11, saying they are not indicative of any trend.

He said in assembly bypolls, ruling party wins and it does not indicate any wave. "May be we were not so attentive as we were in Firozabad," he said.

Congress candidate Raj Babbar defeated SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's daughter-in-law Dimple by 85,343 votes.

Amar Singh as Foreign Minister by Raj on 11 Nov 2009

With the stars of Samajwadi Party on the wane, I apprehend the marginalisation of Mr Amar Singh, his poor health notwithstanding. Amar Singh is a mercurial person. Despite controversies surrounding him, he is a colourful person who has an uncanny knack of devising weirdest of logics to win an argument. In this regard, he is an asset of India, who should be used as Special Minister for handling Pakistan. I am saying this with all seriousness as for dealing with Pakistan, we need persons like him and NOT like Manmohan Singh/ SM Krishana etc. Amar Singh and Chidambaram can prove a effective team to challenge Pakis. This suggestion is beyond party lines.

Good work done by the people by abby on 11 Nov 2009

good work done by people of UP this has to happen as mulayam has moved out from mass base to flim based people he removed mass base leaders to keep Amarsingh happy so the people also knows now that mulayam doesnot need the common leaders he needs flimy leaders like amarsingh sanjaydutt jayapradha.rather than doing any good to mulayam Amarsingh has indirectly destroyrd mulayam .know is the time for mulayam to go back to his roots ie mass based leaders and throw out people like Amarsingh who has not done any benefit to him but hsa destroyed his party

THE DREAM ENDS by R Suresh on 11 Nov 2009

The BJP has lost its deposits everywhere in UP except the traditional Lucknow West, where too it lost. This spells the death of BJP in UP where it is an also ran. With it, the dream of the BJP ever again coming to power at the Center ends.

Well done by Narendranathan on 10 Nov 2009

The people of UP has done a wise job in electing a congress MP to become supportive of UPA at centre so that the development under the leadership of professional like Dr. Manmohan Singh can be ushered at a phenomenal speed which is very imperative for our country to become a developed nation.Well done.Wee

Anyone better than SP by karan on 10 Nov 2009

I dont care who wins as long as SP is routed. The state of UP and Bihar is so bad that Major parties have to make a comeback. However these results are not irreversible as we have seen in the past and can be easily reversed in 1 election cycle...though i think Congress is a scum of a party ...it better perform some development and improve law n order ..and terrorism in UP ..or else it will be also gone.BTW Raj Babbar did a great job in kicking out a Dynasty Raj candidate ..good job ...

NRI by Imtiaz on 10 Nov 2009

I AM VERY VERY HAPPY TO KNOW RAJ BABBER A SECULARIST HAS WON THE FEROZABAD L.S. SEAT. RAJ BABBER IS A VERY GOOD PERSON HE HAS SUPPORTED MINORITIES IN MANY WAYS AND HOPEFULLY HE WILL SERVE ALL THE PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF RELIGION. IMTIAZ, JEDDAH-SAUDI ARAIA.

No to Dynasty by Veer Sain on 10 Nov 2009

Voters have said No to Mulayam Singh to try to build a Dynasty. No to arrogant Amar Singh who tried to pull 'Samajwadi Bahu' stunt. Well done Firozabad. My heart goes to poor Dimple who had nothing to do with politics but got dragged into it because of her egoist Father in law.

It is not the victory for Congress by arun kumar on 10 Nov 2009

But anti Mulayam votes. Otherwise the same pattern should have been seen in Assembly results too. In fact Congress has been routed and it has become a party existing in South of Nagpur. In Haryana Congress has done horse trading to retain its ministry by breaking r MLAs from Bishnoi. Some years later you will see a heading in these columns where CBI would be examining the amount of transaction made to purchase these legislators. The future for BJP is very bright as next elections will be fought between BJP and BSP. Mulayam Singh should look at his relations with Amar Singh. Laloo, Ajit Singh too await same fate sooner or later. Congress will eat away NCP and Trinamool then what is left on national scenario to stop Congress - ONLY BJP.

What an analysis by R Sundar on 11 Nov 2009

The Chaddiwallahs can be very good comic script. They just have this good sense of humour which needs to be appreciated. Even after such a massive defeat, if they are saying that BJP is on the ascendant then what to say except that they are absolutely mad.

Dream On by Veer Sain on 10 Nov 2009

Arun, You are obviously a BJP Chamcha who does not see the writing on the wall. I have read your comments which have no logic. According to you, LKA made sacrifices for the country but you could not mention even one. You see future of BJP bright, a party who got into indighting after Lok Sabha Polls debacle instead of introspection. You may fantacise to any extent You are not alone. This is the close mindedness of You hard core BJP wallas. Dream on my friend. In the mean time Congress will keep crushing you all.

HAPPY TO SEE BJP BITE THE DUST by IndanHeart on 10 Nov 2009

I AM NOT HAPPY OVER CONGRESS' WIN BUT TOO MUCH HAPPY TO SEE THE END OF BJP. MULAYAM LOST JUST BECAUSE HE ADOPTED THE CRIMINAL KALYAN SINGH.

Decisive Mandate by Nitin Mathur on 10 Nov 2009

The Congress increases its tally in the Lok Sabha. What is impressive in Raj Babbar's victory is that the diffference is huge. It is clearly a case of votes not being cast in favour of the SP candidate. The prudent voters have noted the 'taken for granted' attitude. Hopefully, the voters have calculated the utility of having a SP Opposition MP and a Congress MP who may bring development projects as UPA is in power. Hope Raj Babbar and Rahul gandhi now focus on bringing some Central government projects back to UP so that the people start recognising the work which MPs are supposed to get done. Congress now adds a constituency in South West UP and this spreads it presence across all portions of state and after a long time in more than 20 seats in UP. Years of caste politics have left UP back by years..Time to turn a new leaf. The young Congress MPs need to work hard now. The constituency should feel progress. Choose Solar Power, Rain Water harvesting & Motorable Roads to start work on.
